Bullets fly in ATM blast drama

A FURIOUS gun battle between police and robbers after an ATM was blown up in Kwazakhele early yesterday saw one suspected bomber wounded and arrested.

Another fleeing suspect was also believed to be wounded and a massive manhunt for the gang has been launched.

No money was taken from the partially blown up Absa ATM, but the brazen gang tried to return to retrieve cash after initially fleeing.

Police rushed to the ATM, outside a shopping centre on the corner of Koyana and Johnson streets, after a loud explosion was heard at about 4am yesterday.

Flying Squad spokesman Captain Rassie Erasmus said four armed men opened fire as a Kwazakhele police station patrol van approached to investigate.

“The policemen gave chase and returned fire,” he said.

The two Kwazakhele officers chased the gang around the corner of the shopping centre into Johnson Road where a car with more armed men lay in wait.

“They opened fire on the police while fleeing the scene in a Ford Telstar,” said Erasmus.

Moments after the first shoot- out with the occupants of the Telstar, the gang returned in what is thought to have been another attempt to get the cash.

“The two policemen saw them turn the car around half way up the road and head back, still shooting,” said Erasmus.

But reinforcements were on the way. The lights and sirens alerted the robbers and they again tried to flee.

In an ensuing shootout, one suspect was wounded in the leg and arrested, while another was believed to be wounded in the upper body.

He managed to flee in their vehicle, which headed in the direction of Soweto-on-Sea.

Police dog unit and flying squad members arrived on the scene moments afterwards.

“A dog was let out and ran straight to the Absa ATM and sat down,” said Erasmus, adding they are trained to sit when detecting any explosive material.

The bomb unit was notified and the area was cordoned off. It was found that two detonators were placed on the ATM, but only one had gone off.

“We thought that there might be a secondary explosion so we decided to clear the area.”

Police notified Absa, which dispatched a cash-in-transit van so that the money, which was not even touched, could be safely removed from the ATM‘s vault.

While transfer of the money was under way, police surrounded the ATM to ensure that the robbers who escaped did not return in another brazen attempt.

“No police were injured in the gun battle,” said Erasmus.

He added that if it were not for the fast reaction and “quick thinking of the Kwazakhele police (station) members, the situation could have been far worse and probably deadly”.

dude - shooting with a pistol is not like in the movies. it is difficult and i can imagine how much more difficult it gets when 4 guys are shooting back at you.

thats why is you ever consider a weapon for personal defence u get something like a semi automatic shotgun - funny enough here is south africa's version http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armsel_Striker

anyway the pleasure with this shotgun is you dont aim and shoot - you point and shoot with the luxury of 11 more rounds to obliterate your target or targets.

oh how i would love to use this on some people.

I know how difficult it is - just sad that none of the dirty bastards were killed.

Hopefully our police can take your advice and arm a few good guys with those shotguns.
 
shotguns arent good enough, same principle applies in terms of aiming while on the move.. its not easy at all to target and fire in single shots at a target, regardless of the 'size' of the weapon..
whereas a couple of 'squirts' from an automatic weapon, put a lot of bullets into that area within half a second..
the SA police need some of those new fangled pistols with laser beam sights - so that its easier to aim exactly at the target..
that or good ole fashioned Uzi's, to pump multiple holes through cars filled with shooting morons..

You need smoke/dust/Nightvision to see the beam.

A simple AK should do the job just fine. 100s of child soldiers have proven they are fool-proof and easy to use.:(

I'd rather have another of these - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remington_870 - the racking sound alone is enough to make a burglar soil himself. :)
 
kiling criminals is not like a bruce willis movie

in real life you dont dodgy a full ak clip, you get hit a few times and die

in real life you dont run around like rambo dodging bullets and head shotting the enemy
 
Frankie unless you have been in this sort of situation before I would hold off on criticizing the officers involved, the fact that the pursued these criminals even though they were heavily outgunned and outnumbered speaks a lot for their bravery. They deserve to receive a commendation for their actions.

As for using a shotgun, it is not an effective weapon in this situation as it has a limited effective range and penetrating power; they should have had an R5.

If they had been using an R5 it would have been in semi Auto as any weapon fired on fully automatic is not all that accurate, you waste ammunition and you run the risk of a stray bullet hitting a innocent civilian, remember a bullet will travel till it hits a object or its kinetic energy is expended and it drops to the ground, so you have to be careful.

Laser sights are useful but in a shootout you don’t have time to use it. And the distance may be to great.

What you see on TV and what happens in real life are two completely different things, believe me when those bullets start to fly past your head you are going to look for cover.

Shot with this shotgun and it is frightening, prefer the semi auto shotgun though, but i agree you need an automatic rifle like the R5 to spread the fear of hell into these robbers, they seemed to be better prepared and armed than the SAPS were. Time the cops get tough on these bastards.

We need more helicopters to go around, and they need to be in the air 24/7 in GP. Just get them to use their 1 000 000 rounds a minute chain guns to completely destroy any trace of get away vehicles. Good luck to any criminals who think they can take that farker on :cool:
 
Better option is to install a small explosive device in the heads of criminals.
If they commit a second crime, BOOM.

Problem solved.
 
Good for the boys in blue. Brave indeed. However, as much as I will concede that it is not trivial to take aim and fire with a pistol while pursuing criminals, better training would most certainly result in better aim - as well as the added advantage of less chance of innocent bystanders being shot.
 
You can never have enough training or practice
