8Mb is better than 4Mb
You might be too far away from the exchange to achieve consistent 10Mb speeds.
Don't we all want 10 meg...
8Meg is still super super fast! Good for nearly 900kB/s
Not so long ago (15 years ago?) LAN's couldn't even achieve that speed.
lol dude. You just being greedy now. Take 8meg and go sleep.
If he's been bumped down he has the right to know why, and at least to ask why, for being a paying customer. It's IRRELEVANT whether 8Mbps is "good enough" - he came here to find out why he's on 4Mbps even though he was on 10Mbps recently.
whippey: 0800 375 375. Nobody here can actually solve this problem for you - you'll have to query with Telkom. You're welcome to bring the issue up here, but then at the very least you should tell us what exchange you're on, or if you don't know then provide your area code and first 3 digits of your phone number, then you can see if others have had a similar problem, and what region they're in.
Also, as Hellhound said: post your ADSL line statistics so we can see if Telkom downgraded you based on your distance from the exchange. THAT's what this forum is for. We're all just enthusiasts who can use this platform to share and exchange knowledge and experience - nobody here actually works for Telkom etc.
Everyone else (who told him to live with 8Mbps): shuddup. He didnt want to know anything about 8Mbps, and I'm sure if any of you were downgraded even from 10Mbps to 8Mbps you'd all have fat whinges. Really pointless responses ^_^
yes i was, was syncing at 9566 kbps! With no issues at all.If Whippey says he was syncing stabley on 10mb, I trust that, regardless of his line attenuation and noise margin. If he was syncing at 10mb and it was stable and not dropping, then there is no reason for telkom to push him back down. The least they could have done is let him try it out for a little longer to see if the consistency remains.
It's like practically impossible to sync at 10Mbps at 43db downstream attenuation, if your noise margin is 5.5dB on 4Mbps. Maybe you can defy my somewhat knowledgeable intuition - but even if you do, there's no chance it would be a stable 10Mbps. Whippey, somehow I really doubt your modem ever saw 10Mbps, or ever will see 10Mbps unless you can lower that attenuation, and increase that noise margin. You can try get them to put you on 6Mbps and see how that goes... I've got 35dB attennuation and my noise margin is 16, and even I am hoping against the odds that I'll be able to get a stable 10Mbps. Your modem isnt syncing at 4Mbps at the moment, but at 7.5Mbps. Now the problem with syncing at max attainable rate is that if the conditions fluctuate you might drop sync, so try get Telkom to put you on 7Mbps, if that's even possible, otherwise go for 6. Rather get a stable, consistent 6Mbps, than a dropping unstable "7.5Mbps" which never even hits 5Mbps throughput anyway

Fragtion: While my line hasnt been upgraded to 10mbs yet, I have seen my downloads peak up to 1,2MB/s and then 800KB/s, for a maximum of 5 seconds, then it goes back down to 480 - 500KB/s.
