I managed to snag my front bumper when parking early last month. When I reversed everything seemed fine, but now the entire left side of the bumper has started to separate from the rest of the bodywork. I've looked at it, and there's a small metal tag fixing the bumper to the body that got broken.

Took the car in this week to the dealer and was told that they don't do bodywork repairs, and I need to go to to a panelbeater. Just searched on the Net and found this post. Seems like I might be able to sort it out myself with a bumper repair kit. Anyone have experience with this? Don't want to fork out a couple of thousand bucks for a ridiculously small problem like this.

The car is a red Hyundai i20, 2009 model.

A picture of the damaged part would help a lot as there could be several ways to approach this.

@ponder - the car is still at the dealer. Will post pic. No damage to the bumper itself, the trailing edge won't stay flush with the rest of the bodywork because of the broken tab.

Took it to two panel beaters for a quote on the way home. One backyard operation offered to use some plastic weld to hold it down (R700), but said it might or might not hold long term. The other big name place immediately said that bumper replacement was the only way to go (R5000), and that there was no way to weld it securely because of previous damage to the bumper.

Qbond for the win.
At the very least it will be fixed for a while as a cheap alternative.

Don't worry, you actually didn't hit anything, you are just experiencing the normal Hyundai biodegrade all on its own. :)

By now I'm sure the entire inside of the car has lost it's rubber coating as well.

Qbond it is then. It seems to be able to fix just about anything :D

+1:D Had the same issue with both sides of a BMW - the bumper scraped when reversing out a driveway and broke both sides and popped a headlight washer cover off at the same time:erm:
