You'd know if it's gout. It starts off as a slight pain or itchiness, then progresses to pretty severe pain and then finally to ****ing agony where you want to cut the toe off just to escape the pain. You can't walk, can't sit and definitely can't sleep. If a sheet or blanket touches the toe, it feels like coarse sandpaper being scraped against your skin.
Your toe will be red and slightly swollen, but it might not be obvious especially early on. Anti-inflammatories can help with the pain, but it's probably better to go see a doctor.
And yeah, young people get it too. Seems to be related to lifestyle and genetics, not really age so much.
Edit: Although the first attack is normally pretty mild. I've had 2 and the second time was definitely much worse. And longer.
