Yassis! Was 99% done with typing this post, uploaded pictures and then, boom! The tab disappeared!
Let's try again.

In April 2022, a friend bought a bunch of Mecer inverters and sold one to me at Cost.
Mecer 5kw R7900.

Mecer.jpg

I saved up for a few months and added my Tax Refund to the savings, then bought a Hubble AM5 from VOLTEX for R31625:

I then got a few quotes from Installers, First was R4500, second was R9000 and third was R11500.
However, the 3rd guy, also advised against using the Mecer. He explained that the Hubble and Mecer are a "Mismatch" and recommended Synsynk, Dye or Luxpower.
I then put my Mecer up for sale for R10500 (they were retailing for R11k-R12k at that time) and I got a buyer within a day for R10k.
Now to replace the Inverter with a proper one.
The Luxpower SNA5000 was classified as off-grid and the cheapest of the lot at R13k-ish.
BUT, no1 had stock in Cape Town.
At the time the Sunsynk and Dye was about R25k and was getting rave reviews here, on powerforum and all over.
I researched the Luxpower LXP5000 hybrid inverter and liked what I saw. I was also on the Luxpower Whatsapp support group and saw that these LXP units are solid!

I then found "the last LXP 5000 in stock" at Solar Sonic for R21 900.
LUX LXP5000.jpg

Bought that and contacted the Installer, who, now almost 2 months later honored the quote and still installed at the quoted price.

Once installed, all went really well.

Just one day in June, the wife and I were away and the kids messaged to say "everything died".
I Called the installer who came out, found it to be a dead phase on the City supply side.
He temporarily bridged the non-essentials onto one phase and used the 2nd phase for the inverter (third phase being dead).
He never charged for this.

A few weeks later the City sends their guys out to replace a breaker outside and we have the 3rd phase working again.
I contact the Installer who comes out again and switches everything back to the way it was. (R640 callout and phase "fix").

I then started considering Solar Panels and started this thread.
That's just about the time Solar Sonic had a sale (still ongoing at the time of writing this) for 455w Canadian Panels at R2198 each.
I jumped at the opportunity and bought 10.
Panels.jpg

I also considered that 25% of that cost is refundable next year when I do my Tax

Panels installation cost was a bit high R21928, but I wasn't prepared to use anyone else.
I completed the COCT application myself, sent it to the Installer to fill in his details and check it. He signed and returned it with the Engineers drawing. I then Submitted to the City and they acknowledged receipt thereof.

They installed on Monday:

First 2 x days of PV production was good.
DAY 2 Production
2nd day PV Graph.jpg

Day 3 and 4 were a bit cloudy.
Yesterday however, I decided to change settings a bit.
I noticed the PV production starts at about 6h45 and runs till about 18h30.
So I changed settings as follows:
Use battery till 60% (On Grid Discharge)
Use Battery till 20% (Off Grid Discharge)
A/C Charge disabled (so battery only charges from PV), there is a "quickcharge" button on the Luxpower app, which force charges it from Grid if needed.
So what happened last night was, the battery was used till about 8pm (60% SOC on Battery), then it switched to grid.
We had Load Shedding from 2am to 4am, again it used Battery. Battery was drained to 45% then it went back to grid.
Then once the sun came out, PV started Charging the Battery, and as the PV Production increased, the PV provided load to the house and charged the Battery.
By 10ish am, the battery was fully charged and the house load was covered by the PV.
Very happy so far. Might tweak it a little more as time goes one, but happy with my spend and decisions so far!

Today's Graph so far...
PV After settings changed.jpg

Summary:
Total Cost of Hybrid system

Hubble AM5 - R31 625
Luxpower LXP5000 - R19 800 (Cost of R21800 less profit off Mecer inverter sale R2000)
Installation (Batt and inverter) - R11 500
Canadian 455w (10 x panels) - R16 485 (Cost of R21980 less Tax Rebate 25%)
Installation (Panels) - R21 928
Total R101 338

Good work! I'm interested in your charge / discharge settings, do you mind posting it?

Sure, but please note, I'm still testing and checking what works best for MY Application and load.
Please first check with a professional before making changes to your system.

So a week has passed and so far yielded 53.1KWh. However, I suspect this will definitely increase since the Changes I made on Friday.
The use of the battery for the first part of the evening till 50% SOC helped with more efficiency.
Screenshot_20231009_104447_LuxPowerView.jpg

In fact, last night, because there was no load shedding scheduled, I changed battery on Grid SOC cut off to 30%. So the system used 70% of the Battery last night.
By 9h40am the Solar had fully charged the battery.
By 10h44am I had generated 6KWh just today!

Solar yield summary for the week and one can see the increase in Solar use.
Saturday was significant as we used the vacuum, Dishwasher, Washing Machine (x2 cycles)
Oct Solar first week.png
Tuesday 50% of power used was Solar
Wed 38% of power used was Solar
Thurs 44% of power used was Solar
Small tweaks to system:
Fri 66% of power used was Solar
Sat 76% of power used was Solar
Sun 68.29 of power used was Solar
Mon (till 10h45) 146% of power used was Solar

I see the app also reports for you that it is exporting to grid, even though the setting is off. Annoying bug. At least once a day I'd see the system export something like 31W to grid

Yes, i think it has something to do with the "fast zero export enable" setting. Not sure how that works. I read something about it making the inverter "refresh" quicker than the std 5 seconds or something.

So managed to generate 283,3kWh for Oct (2nd-31st).
Problem is, the Geyser and Oven are still on non-essentials.
Plan to get this moved over to the Grid side of the Inverter, so excess Solar can heat the Geyser during the day.
Total saved in October, roughly R1000.

Yearly Summary Oct 2023 Stats.jpg

Yesterday was the highest solar yield so far 12kwh.
Oct 2023 Summary Overview.jpg

Lovely seeing how the reliance on Grid drops!!

Grid Power Oct 2023.jpg

September 2023 Grid use! So happy this is in the past.
Grid Power Sept 2023.png

Novembers definitely been a better month.
315kWh produced, 32kWh more than October.
But also 20kWh less consumption.
13 November was the only day Solar Prod exceeded consumption and 20 November was a bad solar day, Lot's of thick cloud cover.

Nov Solar.jpg

Dec 2024 Production looking good. Our geyser burst in Jan so we installed a new Geyser and got a 2KW element installed, then had the geyser added to the Inverter.
So where we were using about 10kw's from Eskom per Day before, this is down to 3-5kw's per day from Eskom.
Heating the Water with Solar from about 15h30 to 17h00 seems best so the water stays hot till the next morning for Morning Showers.
December Solar production.jpg
Jan 2024 Production.jpg

Jan 2024 Performance
Total Yield Jan 2024 388,8 kWh
Total Eskom Usage 102,3kWh
Total Usage 444,8kWh
Best day of solar prod 19th Jan at 15,7kWh
Also finally broke the 1MWh mark

Did a thing yesterday.
Got gatvol of having to change the geyser times manually on the 10 year old CBI Timer.
Got me a CBI Astute from Communica (R530) on Saturday, installed it yesterday.
Install took all of 5 mins, but having to cut and size the DB cover properly was a mission.
The Astute is slightly wider than the old CBI Timer.
Anyways, setting this up was quick and easy.
Only Dissapointment is that I dont need/get to tinker too much. It's setup and has schedules for the whole week.
Also gives notifications when a schedule is excecuted.

Nice, you could have removed the black housing, would have fitted then.

Ah! So it's a rail adapter.
Cool. Strange, because I probably removed that when I installed the old manual CBI Timer.
Was probably too much in a hurry to get this installed and working.
LOL, nobody ever reads the manual.
I did the same when i installed it for the pool pump.
Did not make the mistake twice when i installed one for the geyser.

So last week I found out that Solarways supplies is selling the same 455w Canadian Solar Panels that I have for R1256 each.
Went ahead and bought another 4. This will take the VMP up to 289.1 per MPPT, well within the Max of 385.
But will increase my Array to 6370w.
