DIVX enabled players will play avi's no problem, copy them as they are onto disk and watch them no problem, no conversions required and many can fit on the disk as they are still in their original avi format.
Older players and non-divx enabled players will need to have those files either put into a dvd container or converted or both. This conversion process sometimes makes the file MUCH larger than the original (and most times with a loss of quality too) and hence you will only fit a few episodes on the disk as opposed to the previous process.
In Linux with DEVEDE if the files are already MPG or AVI format you can specify that the files are already playable and just need the container in place which is exactly what you want, no conversion will take place, devede will just add the files to the container and create the iso for you with menu shortcuts included. Nifteh!

You can also try super© on windows to convert stuff, and put stuff in containers where they don`t belong... like an mp3 in an avi, or a vob as a series of bitmaps.
