Though I just joined the forums, I've been an avid reader of MyBB for quite some time. I realise that this isn't a technical support centre, but it would be great if someone can help me with the following questions/issues/problems regarding my ADSL connection. I know it is a lot to read.

---:] Some Details [:---

I have the DoBroadband 2 option from Telkom ( I know, not the best, but I was still clueless those days) and the Mega 100WR router. I thus have a 384Kbps/128Kbps line.

---:] Question 1 [:---

My connection seems to be dropping regularly these days. I've been using the service since it practically started and never had so many problems until a couple of months ago. it seems to drop more often the closer I come to the end of the month, but also the closer I come to my cap. Is anybody else experiencing this problem?

Since I've been using the service before without any problems I am pretty sure that everything is connected properly and that my settings are correct. I have yet to ask (read try) Telkom to come out and check my line. I thought that I should rather ask here first before even attempting that. :p

---:] Question 2 [:---

In line with this, it seems that webpages are "hanging" or "stalling" as I try to load them. The biggest culprit is Google. I do a search and then suddenly it just takes forever to load the webpage - forcing me to refresh the page until it loads. However, mere moments ago it was doing the search instantly. The same problem occurs with other websites too for a while and then suddenly, just as it happened, everything is fixed again.

I asked around a bit and someone told me that I should check my DNS settings and, instead of obtaining them, enter a fixed one. I tried that, but it didn't seem to work. Does anyone else experience this problem? Which DNS server is the best one to use? What else can I do to address this problem?

---:] Question 3 [:---

With regards to the above, I was also wondering if it won't solve the problem by changing my ISP to someone else. I like the new offering by DigiChilli and am seriously considering them as an option.

That should be everything. Thanks in advance!

The problem described above about the google pages not displaying is a routing issue on your ISP's side, when the page is called for it is cached to the ISP's server but it not displayed, when you refresh the page again it calls the server rather than the page directly and because the page is already cached to that server it is displayed correctly.

The connection dropping is a completely unrelated issue, I would need to see the router logs in order to tell you if its your line or maybe a router that is giving up the ghost. Maybe you can PM them to me?

ShdwFlash, just be careful of what info you provide to Technically, we're pretty sure he is Person who has scammed a number of people on this forum previously, as well as having a few run-ins in the states, plus in another thread he has shown a woeful lack of understanding of basic networking concepts, as well as information that should be pertinent to his market.

As for your questions, the constant dropping of your connection could be a line issue, or a router issue, or an ISP Radius server issue. I would suggest getting a prepaid account with someone like Afrihost/Axxess/WebAfrica (maybe 1 or 2gb) and see what the experience is like on that ISP. The stalling issue, may or may not be related to question 1, trying a new ISP via a prepaid account might help you either link the two or seperate them entirely.

Thanks for the advice and the warning, ToxicBunny. Ironically, my brother (who is currently in Mauritius) is also experiencing the "stalling" problem from time to time with Google. :P

I will take a look at getting a prepaid account (or maybe borrow someone's ISP for a while to test) and will get back with the results a.s.a.p. If anybody else has a suggestion, it would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible that the connection dropping towards the end of the month is linked to everyone trying to finish their cap and therefore putting a greater stress on the line?

Not the ADSL line physically dropping... that should be irrespective of how much load is on the network... the Internet connection dropping is a different story though, that MIGHT have something to do with an excessive load, but it shouldn't to be honest, I've never experienced it.

Stalling on the connection though is something I'm all too familiar with and its related to routing and DNS issues and all sorts.
