Burning your clutch

impossible. if you release the clutch completely and don't use the accelerator, your car will stall - especially on an uphill.

the mere fact that you can do this means your clutch is already finished.

on an uphill yes it will stall ... but on a level road, i use this alot, the slightest of accelerator and then just let the car roll in gear with pressing the accelerator or clutch ... try it ... doubt its damaging anything ... saves my clutch in traffic

And when I say 'uphill' - I mean slight incline ... not huge

your car can NOT stand still in 1st gear with both clutch and accelerator pedals untouched. it's just not possible. if you can, your clutch is facked.

i could do this since my car was new?

men tend to burn clutch because they don't use the handbrake on the uphill... women on the other hand always roll back so they are safe:D

So we all have fscked clutches? :/

The only person talking about doing that, and standing still, is you. ;) If the incline isn't too severe, a manual car would simply start crawling forward like an auto when you lift off the brake pedal.

i think we are all talking about different traffic here, thats the problem.

if one says "crawling" in traffic - I see that as "creeping along at less than walking speed"

anyone can move the car without touching anything in 1st, but at some point you are going to HAVE TO step on either the clutch or the gas as the car goes slower and slower.

wiki says:

Stalling also happens when the driver forgets to depress the clutch and/or changing to neutral while coming to a stop

It varies from car to car. I had a 1.9TDI SEAT Ibiza Cupra as a company car for a good long while. In the peak-hour N1 crawl between the Rivonia and William Nicol overpasses it would quite happily creep along in 2nd gear with no throttle input. 320Nm torque in a car the size of a shoe will do that... man, I miss that car... :(

Hectic okes. I use my clutch a lot in peak hour traffic. I am going to have to learn a new driving style soon. At least I don't sit in peak hour traffic to or from work.

...i probably should too i hardly ever use my hand brake for steep hill stops

I always use my handbrakes for that, but it was more for driving comfort. I didn't realise that not doing it was bad. I am thinking more about riding the clutch in peak hour traffic. :wtf:

Just FYI - I can do this uphill too ... William Nicol offramp. My clutch going?

Obviously can't just remove else I stall - but once I'm sitting with no feet on the pedals, the ECU seem to adjust and give it more petrol on an incline ...
