I was under the impression that with the whole contention ratio thing, there is a certain amount of bandwidth available to all 50 clients in a 50:1 ratio. And I understood that if other users are not using bandwidth, then whoever is online would be able to make use of it?

So in essence, does a 128K package mean:
1) A minimum of 128k, but possibly more
2) A maximum of 128k, but possibly less
3) 128K only, no more, no less?

Because much as I hate ADSL, the fact that downloads CAN come thru at 37K/sec, when the bandwidth gods are smiling at you, being stuck at 128k forever is a bit daunting.

What is the truth?

i speak under correction, but from the results i have heard, it seems like option #2. If your used to ADSL, then ur used to paying R1k per month, why not get the 256k package for round R850 ?

I am hoping though that you can atleast burst in the 3gig tower capacity to other users on the same tower. Has anyone tested this yet???

not yet, but 128k will be limited to 128k and maybe less, depends on how congested the network will be

thats why i have 512k :P

Noone, explain this to me, I am asking because i dont know and not trolling like the new word i learned last week

if i have 128kb, and the line is congested, and we get very little through from overseas or sites.... or anotehr scenario , there is 50 peopel on the one tower, 49 people are downloaded at the same time on a 128 connection, and they are maxing that tower out, will you with a 512 kb connection have a better speed than them if the tower is maxed out, or will you have a better speed only when the tower allows for more data to come through because there is more bandwidth available than being used.

assuming we are working on 50:1

TadMadLad:

The way those things usually work, is that each package has a priority. If the towers are maxxed and you want to dl'd sumthing, since you are on the highest priority everyone with a lower priority will be sort capped down, so that you get first preference.

But hey, I don't think in 2 years the towers would be maxxed out ever.

..- dot dot dash ;)

The towers all have fiber running out underground afaik that's how they get the broadcast data there, kinda like the cell networks who use telkom's lines from tower to tower. They ST guys said the data rate can burt to 3mbps when not so busy, which would be nice... probly if one out of 50 ppl is on a tower that person will get 3mbps I assume? As freeek said re the priority if you're alone you're at the top of the list but when other people r downloading then you get sent down the chain depending on your package..

Shyte i can't wait for Blouberg to be switched on... pity DSL is such a crap option, the SAT-3 cable goes into the sea about 10km from me home [:0]

Then why the false advertising? Their home page clearly says:
High Speed. Portable. Always on. Up to 3Mbps of broadband at your fingertips.

Even if it isn't all the time, the bandwidth should be shared.

And this is also on their website under features, and this is not features of the modem:
A 24-hour "always on" connection
Supports up to 3Mbps transmission speeds
No "capping" on usage
A 24-hour telephonic support line and help desk
Bi-directional communications via the same transport medium
Notebook and desktop options are available
Self-Installation - no technician required
Connects via USB or ethernet port
Connects to PPPoE router to support multiple users
Plug and Play with Windows 98, 2000, ME and XP
A wireless interface from notebook / desktop PC to Sentech’s broadband network

What's up?

Indeed you can get 3Mbps if you are willing to pay for it. They don't have a package for it at the moment but there was rumour late last year that they would release a 1Mbps package later this year.

On the "bursting" issue... initially it was Sentech's intention to allow bursting above your package's rated speed however they adjusted it a few months ago i.e. you are now capped to your package's speed. On the contention issue, the way it probably works is that if the network is saturated you get speed directly proportional to your package i.e. if 128k users are getting 2 KB/s then the 512k users get 8 KB/s.

No wires, no fibres... everything is wireless [:)]

Dagnabbit I fawt Transtel provided fibre for those towers! Eish... [:I] what a moron

I'm sure I read many moons ago in the forums that some tower had a 18meg line going out or something like that? Or is that then specially for Mywireless??

Some of the big TV Towers do use fibre but that too is being phased out.
