I live in Strand and work at UCT and would like to start taking the train to work, from Strand then to Cape Town basically then to Mowbray station. I know the Business Express was recommended by a friend of mine but not sure how it works. Can one just buy a normal ticket for it? Or what other alternatives would there be to driving?

No, you have to buy a special ticket (Strand to Cape Town)

doesnt it stop at salt river? then just take the train to mowbray to there. that business train is kewl straight. i would only take it if it stopped where i needed to be. UCT is awkward with the train though, . unless you go to rosebank and walk upto the campus from there.

Use 2 bikes: I rode to the station, locked up bike 1. Took the train, then got on bike 2 on the other side. If you can lock an old bike up overnight at the destination (Rosebank/Rondebosch?) station, that could work. U might be a bit sweaty when you arrive tho...

I used to park bike at the bridge between upper and lower campus, and walk from there, giving myself a chance to cool down- cycling all the way to the top of UCT is a bit hectic :p

I was on the waiting list for 6 months...its very popular. Was told last month they now have a place for me...but the times wont work for me. Let me know if you want my spot...

I don't think it stops at Salt River. I think after Mutual it takes the Esplanade route. If it does go via Salt River, then I don't think it stops there as it is not indicated on the timetable.

So OP might end up in town then would have take a train from there.
