I'm looking for budget laptops (mainly to be used for email, office mp3 etc), reasonable quality for export. Any pointers?

I have only heard good reviews about lenovo(IBM)

LENOVO 3000 N200 Celeron M 550 (2.00GHz), 1x512 MB, 120GB/5400rpm, DVD±RW DL, Intel X3100, 256MB shared, 15.4" WXGA TFT(1280x800) R 3,949

Thanks; i'm assuming that these prices are vat excl? And are dealer prices?

jip but they from an old pricelist i have so if anything they will be cheaper than that

HP 530 / HP 550 - They begin pricing at R5000.00 (at descent suppliers) and they have everything you need (DVD-RW / WLAN etc...)

So i need to become a dealer, or find someone to work with; problem is i'm not based in SA

Based in DRC, where laptop prices are beyond stupid, leading me to scratch my head .

My advice, go with entry level ACER. 1 Year travellers warranty is great peace of mind. The Extensa range is great for business and budget

They start from about R5500 upwards.

Entry level model is a
Celeron M560 (2.13Ghz)
15.4" screen
Intel Graphics
512MB RAM
80GB Hard Drive
DVD Burner
Wireless, LAN, 5 in 1 Card Reader
XP Pro

Acers are nice....but I'd recommend that one gets a hands-on feel for them cause they tend to change exterior things between the models and then one thing just doesn't feel right.

E.g. the Acer on which I'm typing this has two mouse buttons under the track pad that feel much too "clickey" i.e. one needs to press hard kinda like when a keyboard key get stuck due to coke or something.

And make sure you get a latop with at least 1gb ram. 512 just doesn't cut it.

Agreed, extra hundred buck or so to take you up to the 1GB RAM mark. All depends on the clients budget.

I much prefer the new Acer's "graphite" colour, on all the new ranges it beats the silver casing on the old Travelmates. I have also noticed that they release a new sub-category for each range every coupla months. Havent noticed any subtle deisgn changes.

Each to his one, I much prefer the Sony touchpads......the worst has to go to HP though.

The lenovo sounds strong.
I suppose the next question is how do you become a dealer? Does it make a difference not being based in SA?
