Business Line 4mb line

Hello All!

I have been asked at work to collect some ballpark figures for the following. Please forgive my lack of correct terms :0)

We have approx. 120 people at work who would require internet access, a business connection. They may possibly have to send large data files to Europe as well. Initial thoughts by some was to get a 4mb line with a 2mb redundant line. There would be a need to have a true uncapped account. From what I heard, it would not have to be a dedicated line, too expensive. From what I read on the IS website, it has business 1mb uncapped, do you think they offer 4mb uncapped for businesses? If not, would it be possible to join 4x1mb connections?

Do you feel it would be best to go thru IS?

sure - adsl is much cheaper than diginet/leased lines

but remember 1 thing:

currently even the fastest ADSL profile 4096/384 would be a nightmare if you say that heavy uploading is to be done and u have to use 120 users!

What do you call large files?

What are your requirements for the line i.t.o availability - if the line/s go down will your business cease to function? If so Digitnet would be the way to go, otherwise DSL should be fine. A 4mb line should be fine for 120 users - I'd definately put a proxy on though (In fact I'd say its a requirement) - with content filtering and AV scanning otherwise you'll be spending the rest of your days cleaning up porn/malware/spyware. A proxy will also save a ton of bandwidth if your users surf common sites - news/sports etc. If your on a tight budget look at linux with squid and squidguard otherwise there's many good commercial solutions out there if your willing to pay.

If you get a 1MB line telkom automatically bump you up to a 4MB line. You could get load balancer and use 2 x 4MB lines, thereby your internet still being up when one line dies. Here again you can use linux or go commercial (Radware do a nice network LB)

The Telkom 1mb/upgraded to 4mb. Is this offer indefinite?

Does Telkom offer uncapped?

Good thing with IS, is that they offer 5 static IP addresses

There's not too many places that offer a true 4MB line uncapped. Have a look here

As MrNutz said, if you are planning on UPloading files, then current DSL offerings will not work for you, as the maximum upstream you will get at this stage is 384K.
The magical 4096K is downstream only.

Thanks sin_x - am I correct is saying that on a diginet/leased line, that the upload and download speeds would be the same?


am I correct in saying that if we had the 4mb line, IS would throttle us to 1024 on the uncapped option they have available? (they would not want you theoretically pulling 4x the data)

Correct - if you have a 1MB diginet line you would get 1MB up and downstream. For a business its more reliable, you have a SLA on the line where with DSL if it goes down you log a problem and stand at the back of the queue.

We've got a ton of diginet lines so when any of them go down our network guy k@ks all over the telkom account manager and its fixed asap!!

Keep in mind as well that IS international capacity is as good as dial-up most the time and they are completely unreliable and incompetent.
