Buy and hold is not always appropriate as each investor's investment strategy will be based on many factors that are unique to him or her.

Some people never really look at a price chart. They just assume they'll sell at some point in the future, but like that article shows - you could be selling at only 10% profit after 10 years even though the stock made a 45% move (that you missed out on). Buy & hold is usually fine for the short - medium term, but long term trends need to be considered and traded.
