Buy more bandwidth?

I'm getting capped today most likely (I'm on a 2G account), and I wondered if anyone has some advice on buying more bandwidth, just for the rest of the month.
I'm with Mweb (yes, I know, I should switch, but I've had my @iafrica.com address since '97 and I'd hate to lose it). They will only let me buy bandwidth if I take it till the end of July. I'm away for most of July so this doesn't help me at all.
Any recommendations?

Btw, using Skype and the even better Voipbuster (because of the free intl landline calls) for several hours a day kills bandwidth a lot faster than you'd expect!

I know I need to switch from Mweb long term, but I don't want to switch right now - particularly since I'd have to give a month's notice and that takes me to the end of July anyway. I don't want to start with a new service provider that is going to force me to pay for July in addition to Mweb's cost in July - neither of which I'll be using while i'm away! I'll probably switch to Axxess in a couple of months, but I think I've answered my own question. No-one is going to sell me only 10 days worth of bandwidth!

You could always try the competition on their home page - that way you'll get a feel for their service. When I first got adsl I was with Mweb but figured whats the point.

Oddly enough Tiscali (Mweb in sheep's clothing) offers a top up facility but Mweb itself doesnt.

This is something I've also needed occasionally. A possible business oppertunity for someone with more time and resources than me, perhaps. I was thinking of a kind of pre-paid system, where you buy bandwidth with a credit card in the form of a temporary account only valid until the end of the current month. Use it or lose it, basically.

Anyway, nothing like that exists at the moment as far as I know, so what I did was get an account from budgetadsl. It's a month to month contract and they had me set up within about 5 min or so. Mail them, I'm sure they'll make a plan for you.

RedR axxess does sell bandwidth on a prorata basis so give Paul a call or email him to find out more.

redR, if keeping your email address is the only thing stopping you from canning Mweb's overpriced crap, why not downgrade to an email-box only account with them?

You could get your Axxess account for DSL, and then simply set up your email for connection to your Mweb email account.

I was on 9 gigs out of my 10 (from axxess), and needed to download a linux distribution of around 2.5 gigs. I email axxess, and ended up upgrading my account (for the rest of the month) to a 20 gig all for an extra R100.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone. I signed up with budgetadsl for the rest of the month - their customer service is excellent!

I was thinking about doing that - until I saw the price of the Mweb dialup. R145pm - nothing lower. A bit much for an e-mail address that I don't really need, I'm just sentimentally attached to. I'll get over it and cancel Mweb. Their support (all around from billing to tech support through to the hosting people I dealt with when I transferred a client away from Mweb) is of Telkom standards at best.
And it's crazy that I'm paying for 2G with Mweb what I could be paying for 5G with Axxess!

Quo Vadis Mweb

I am also in the process of moving away from MWEB. It is not only because they are so heavily overpriced, but also when I had problems with my ADSL connection, they always insisted that they can do nothing about it and that I should contact Telskum direct. The more I tried to convince them that I was paying a premium for a one stop solution, the more they insisted that they can do nothing about it.

Well, I have now moved to Imaginet and so far have only had absolutely superior service from them. At the same time I have decided that no ISP will ever hold me at ransom because of my email addresses and have thus registered my own domain and got imaginet to host it at R49 per month. They have even agreed to transfer my free imaginet mailboxes to my domain and host them for no extra cost.

Mweb do have a package called emailer or something like that which cost r70 per month and you can only dial in for up to 3 hours per month but it gives you access to everything else. I only kept mweb for iPass. They say they discontinued it in Feb 2000 but they will stick you on it if you ask.
