I've come to realise that we as South Africans, should support the smaller companies so as to provide that thriving competition which gives good service and avoids being ripped off by monopolies.
I've also noticed that my Vodacom DataSim card (which I assume is the most popular - but I could be wrong) has really lousy speeds here in Cape Town in the afternoons (presumably when people get home from work and are all using it at once). I usually have fast HSDPA speeds of about 2MB per sec in the morning (I subscribed to the 'Vodacom Broadband Advanced') service. In the afternoons it drops to EDGE and is so slow that I can't even load up the www.speedtest.net to measure it. It's unusable.
So off I go to vote with my wallet, and buy a Cell-C sim card. I'd like to give these guys a chance!
I have to register to Rica (goodbye privacy!) and was told to wait 24 hours but it was all working in an hour (hats off to Cell-C). I managed to load on R40 to test drive the 25MB data bundle.
This is where the problems started, because I can't believe that me, a willing and eager customer of reasonable intelligence, was not able to actually load on the data bundle. I searched through the Cell-C website and while it tells me what it costs, there are no instructions on how to LOAD it.
I then try to phone 140, which I've done several times, but to no avail. It tells me that their call centres are busy - but I wouldn't know because after that I only hear voice menus from the automated Cell-C lady. I gave up after being lost in their voice menus, while listening to the Cell-C lady's lovely voice.
How to Buy DataBundle:
- Dial 140
- 1 for english
- 3 for services (nope couldn't find anything here, only how to setup gprs for your phone)
- 4 for products
- 7 for GPRS/Edge (she waffles on about how to sms instructions to my phone - how is that related?)
(try 8 next time?). nope doesn't work.
With Vodacom its so easy, you can dial *111# Service Commands and do it on our phone. With MTN its less easy and you can dial 155, and have to painfully navigate voice menus.
I send two emails to Cell-C. One to '[email protected]' and one to '[email protected]'. I even used the send message facility on their website. Its been a few hours now and not even a reply to acknowledge receipt.
I even tried to google 'How to load a data bundle with Cell-C'.
Perhaps I've missed something obvious (although I did try), and someone here can shed some light on the issue. Unfortunately for Cell-C I've just forked out money to MTN and bought a 1 GB data bundle which should last me the month.
