I am looking to go to the US in July/August and am considering buying a laptop while I am there as they are like half the price that they are here. It will be replacing my Core 2 duo HP 8710w and it will be mainly used for software development. These are my main requirements

* Size and weight: Not important - it will be used as a desktop replacement.
* Processor : Something powerful like an i7. Do these work Ok on laptops? I don't want to have to pump seawater into it's reactor core to keep it cool.
* Memory : Lot's of it. 6GB minimum.
* OS : Windows 7 pro 64 bit
* Screen : 17 inch.
* Graphics card - decentish. It won't be used for gaming but may be used for occasional photo editing in Adobe Lightroom.
* Hard drive: I want two. An SSD as primary for booting with a second 7200 RPM drive for storage.

Any recomendations / good places to buy online?

Thanks :)

id get the i5 (less draining + runs cooler ) with 8 Gigs Ram. (or get a 4 Gig and slap in more ram yourself = cheaper )

just dont get Dell cos it breaks soon after it leaves the box + its stylistically challenged. Id say go for an HP E.g. Envy .. and buy it there on eBay or Amazon.

Asus have a proper worldwide guarantee / warrantee. That's why I bought one of their laptops. Sony, on the other hand, could offer a 'worldwide' guarantee, but it excluded Asia and Africa. Apparantly we're not part of the world.
