Hi,

So recently I got a crack in my iPhone 6 plus's top right hand corner...sad.

In SA you can get it replaced for about R1400.
Paying this amount on a phone thats more than 3 years old isn't really worth it to me.

Now I looked on Amazon for a replacement. The Screen and everything you need comes in at about R600 including shipping and import tax. Read a couple of reviews (There are about 1700 of them) and people seem more than happy with the product. I understand it might not be absolutely perfect but for this price Ill accept it.

This will be my first time ordering anything from amazon.
I also work in IT so to replace a screen is something I have always want to learn to do.

My question is, is there any specific reason I should or shouldn't do it. Something to maybe look out for on amazon? Or any other advice someone can give me would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Had to get my iPhone 7 Plus' screen replaced recently as well. In future, I will rather just get a new phone, but I am upgrading soon and my phone is going to my mom, so it seemed reasonable to pay R2500 to get it replaced. (the person who broke it, had to pay anyway).

Yes, if you have the correct tools, it looked fairly easy to do. But, they had to replace my screen 3 times, before I was happy with it, with every screen having it's own issue. So yes, you can import from Amazon and wait for delivery, fit the screen and then there might be a problem. Also, you need special tools to do this, which I am sure you do not have. Not sure if you will be able to send it back, for replacement and then wait again for delivery on a new one. This is why I chose to get someone local to do it.

I used these guys: https://ismashed.co.za/repair/
and will do so again in the future, if I had to. Awesome service and no questions asked when I reported the issues of my other screens.

Long story short, get someone local to do it for you.

Thanks for the advice.

The kit you order does come with all the tools required to do the replacement.

The guys you referred to me doesnt seem to have a listing for the 6 plus. But I contacted them and now waiting for a reply.

Be aware that many iPhone 8s have had screens repaired with non-Apple parts, which then got bricked with iOS updates.

Noted and thanks. I am looking to repair the 6 plus. But will go and read up if it has happened on any other devices except for the 8 series

Your phone won't be the same again, or that is how I feel about it. You also loose the IP67 rating as they don't replace the glue, when changing the screen. I have this weird thing with my screen, where it will change brightness automatically, even though it is turned of under settings. Not a big deal for me though.

They they reversed that. Lesson: Don't post alarmist videos about beta software.

The problem with non-Apple fixed screens mean you might lose TouchID depending on which version of iOS you run because your TouchID sensor is bonded to the iPhone motherboard at manufacturing time. There's a very good security reason for that (it's got to do with the secure enclave), but your mileage may vary.

Just wanted to post an update for those who might be interested. I ordered the screen on the 23rd of May and got the package this morning. Took about an hour to replace the screen. Can be done a lot quicker, but I was being very patient and double checking everything. Screen looks awesome and everything is working as it should.

That looks like a good replacement. What was your landed cost - I think your original estimate was R600 including shipping etc?

Considering it got to you in double-quick time, that's a great deal. I'll bookmark that supplier.

Not bad and the colour seems reasonably accurate.

My biggest grip with 3rd party screens has always been that it's never quite as colour accurate as the original Apple parts.

The newer phones where the front is actually the front has made it a lot easier to swop a screen. The likes of the iPhone 4S and before was an abomination as the screen was the back of the phone meaning you needed to strip everything else first.

Okey I thought I would do a quick roundup on prices for devices for you guys. Total here listed will include shipping and import taxes.
(uRepair replacement screens except for 6 Plus and 7 Plus)

iPhone 6 - R708.23 (no idea why but the import fees are more on this than the plus)
iPhone 6 Plus - R649.79

iPhone 6s - uRepair doesnt ship it.
- Qi-Eu does however, (4/5 stars) - R696.36
iPhone 6s Plus - R838.16

iPhone 7 - R896.73
iPhone 7 Plus - uRepair again doesnt ship it.
- Qi-Eu does again however, (4.5/5 stars) - R808.16

(Note1: Im not sure if replacing a screen on the 7 will have an influence on the water proof capabilities)
(Note2: I only checked prices for the black models. The white/rose gold appears to be a dollar or two more)

I can honestly not see any difference between this and my previous screen. Maybe if I had another 6 Plus I could do a direct comparison.

Just a normal screenshot added here.

Well a screenshot obviously won’t show up any issue with the the screen as it comes directly from the OS.

But if you aren’t a nerd for colour accuracy most don’t notice.
