Hi folks,

I'm in the market for a new monitor and I need some advice.

I currently have a cheap-ish Samsung 22" monitor - it's great if you look at it dead center, but not so great otherwise (viewing angles). Consequently, my desk has a pile of magazines on it to raise my monitor and that's eating into my desk space. I can buy an external monitor stand, but I'm trying to avoid that.

Now that Black Friday's here, I want to get a new, bigger, better screen and de-clutter my desk. I've looked at the Dell S2419 HGF (https://www.techradar.com/reviews/dell-24-gaming-monitor) and it seems decent at around R3k, but there are some complaints around the TN panel. The key benefit is that it comes with an adjustable monitor stand.

Alternatively, I can spend less money and get a 27" IPS screen, and hopefully the viewing angle won't be an issue anymore. But then I have a lower refresh rate.

I use my hardware for gaming (mainly FPS), work, and a bit of video editing (Udemy courses). I've got a GTX 1080, so I want a screen that can make the most it. My budget is around R3k, preferable at a place that accepts eBucks. Built-in speakers is a bonus.

Any recommendations on what I should buy?

Cheers.

I assume you have a 60Hz monitor currently. 24" is likely a good solution. Don't fall for a 27" 1080P monitor, its difficult to adjust to 27" from 24" anyway. There is also an issue with image quality (which I highly doubt you'll be able to notice). If you want to play games get the 144Hz TN panel, its a good upgrade from a 22". If color accuracy is important to you, get the 27" IPS, but keep in mind that it will likely only be 60Hz refresh rate.

Yep, your assumption is correct.

Is the impact of refresh rate actually noticable, in the real world, when comparing a 60hz monitor to a 120hz monitor?

I'm leaning towards the TN panel Dell screen, although it is more expensive than the 27" IPS one.

If you are coming from a 144Hz or 120Hz monitor down to 60Hz, you'll notice it while gaming. If you are on 60Hz, you'll not notice any difference between 60Hz and 60Hz. If its productivity workloads only, 60Hz is perfect. Just be warned, once you start playing at 120/144Hz, anything slower will be very painful.

Just make sure you have Displayport in, Nvidia cards do not support FreeSync over HDMI.
