Seems a pretty decent model, I have its predecessor the 46D6000 which I'm pretty happy with.

There are other options though, just depends how it will be used i.e what type of source devices will you be plugging in & what type/format content is the most important to you e.g sport or movies at what res.

What will it be used for?

Viewing distance?

Room lighting conditions during times of viewing?

It'll probably boil down to 46" ES6200 3D SMART LED backlit LCD, or 51" E550 3D SMART plasma. Overly bright room + daytime viewing = the LCD, not so bright, dimmer room, night time viewing = plasma.

Just joking, nice tv, not for me though. I am comparing to my 3 year old plasma as a reference point and prefer the plasma

For someone with no such reference point it would probably be a really good buy. i saw the deal advertised with bd player, 6 glasses, and 3 bds for 11k last week.

just a note: the smart tv portion is really really slow even with a 7mbps connection.

Hows the motion handling on the B650 from DSTV HD (SS & Discovery)?

As my reference point is a 200CMR 46D6000, the one big differential I'm struggling with on my E550 plasma is the serious judder (choppy/jerky panning motion) that is present on some DSTV HD content. It is honestly worse than my 50Hz C530 LCD and sours an otherwise pretty decent TV.

If you can afford it, get a Samsung series 8. The picture is noticeably better than the series 7. The size depends on your viewing distance. I have a fairly large room so got the 50" model from Ivan's off Cavendish Square. He gave the best deal by far and I persuaded 2 of my friends to buy the identical tv.

There is a setting to change the motion settings, you may have to play with it. I am not a big sport watcher

Unfortunately there aren't any on an E550 plasma.

Also the one motion enhancement it does have for 24p input (Cinema Smooth) doesn't seem to work at all (though not relevant for DSTV).

No, I was talking about the motion enhancement on the Samsung series 8

No issues at all. I remember when purchasing the the tv that I explicitly went for the 6 series due to the enhanced picture engine. was quite a lot more than the 5 series at that point but was so convinced by it that I paid the difference. (that and the glass bezel and the touch buttons and the network streaming - all of these features I couldn't care less about now).

On another note though, the build quality of the 6 series 3 years ago is way superior to the build quality on the 6 series now. Just seems more solid IMO.

Ya, I suspect the main reason for the E550's keen pricing (for the screen size) is due to Samsung skimping on the signal/motion processing engine for this model.

BTW does your B650 have any motion related settings e.g. AMP or Auto Motion Plus or some derivative?

Have you tried setting the HDPVR decoder's output to 720p? I had judder after splitting splitting the HDMI signal from a new P2 decoder to two plasmas (one a 50B430, other 43E450)? Not sure whether it was due to the splitter or plasma. After changing the output from original (which sometimes output 1080i, other times 720p), the judder went away. Maybe something to do with the interlaced signal.

I would like if someone could confirm whether this is issue on all 50E550 plasmas, as I was seriously considering buying one until now?

Yes, first thing I tried, and it makes little difference on the affected content.

Well let me first qualify what content is affected.

Luckily most of the major/popular sports events (mainly live) are pretty much judder free, likely shot/optimised for 1080i 50 fps. It is other (mainly pre-recorded) content that is problematic with the E550 on the SSHD & Disc HD channels. The content seems to be either of a lower frame rate or irregular cadence (converted from 60fps with frame skipping) causing quite hectic judder.

PS: Lodged a query with MC about this a while ago, alas still no feedback ... http://forum.dstv.com/showthread.php?t=16805

By contrast my 200CMR (100Hz) D6000 LED normalises/smoothens this troublesome content such that no judder is apparent.
