Buying a scooter - no papers??

I have been looking to buy a scooter for quite some time now and since budget is tight I have been looking at 2nd hand ones. I found 2 very reasonable scooters for a great price and in good condition but the problem is that both the sellers dont have the papers for it. The one seller claims to have lost the papers and the other seller said they got the scooter without papers from the person they got it from.

If I did by one of these scooters is there no way I can ever register it or is there a way to get the papers. Should I just stay away and look somewhere else?

Lost papers can be replaced so I have to wonder why he hasn't done so. :confused:
 
I would back away very fast, there is no reason not to have the papers.

For interest sake, does these scooters have valid license disks ?

Didnt have a license disk. Thinking I should rather stay away just now I end up with a stolen one

No papers means special police clearance, payment of back dated fees and fines, then COR and licensing.

And if stolen and you take it for police clearance, don't expect to keep it....

As someone who has lost my vehicle papers. Its literally one trip to the licensing department and a few blue notes and you got one provided your name is on the document as title holder to begin with. If you never took the trouble and it's still the bank (what happened to me) , it is a few extra blue ones, one of which goes to the courier to get papers authorising the reissue

So if a seller can't provide papers, something is up. If it is from an estate it might be a plausible scenario if the papers can't be found, but don't but yourself a headache, even if you feel sorry for the person.

And to the rest of you people, please dont hide your papers where no one can find them
 
Risky as hell OP. And cops down here in CPT anyway, have a habit of pulling people and especially teenagers over to check for license discs, etc.

It's just not worth the headache.

When we got out kids scooters last year, it took some time, but we did eventually get 2 with papers.

Crap is that we found out later, that one of them had the engine changed and had parts that didn't match up with a crappy oil leak that only developed later.

I had to fight with the seller to take his crap back and go and fight with his own mechanic who did the changes and work on it. Engine numbers were also scraped off.

The other side of the coin is: If it drives and you're confident you won't get pulled over, just drive it like you stole it :p

My friend/mechanic came over to have a look at the oil leak. And when we took the engine cover off to check all the seals, he noticed that there were parts not matching up flush. And where the engine number should've been, it was scratched out.
And that's when he froze up, not wanting to work anymore on the thing anymore.

I imagine the precious owner didn't know what had happened - at least that's what he told me. Because most people just go to any back door mechanic. And it turns out that the previous owner's son took it to such a mechanic.
Those guys have so many spare parts laying around and he likely just ended up doing a patch job and stripped an engine and seals off a similar scooter standing around in his yard. Then ended up swapping it out.

Ja, learned a quick lesson with scooters.

They're more of a nightmare, ended up saving a it more and getting the kid a new 100cc Chinese bike from Suzuki South for R10k
