I recently bought a Cr-V, after driving the X3, Grand Vitara, Q5, Freelander and the Volvo XC60.
Of all of these I'd rate the X3 lowest.
Grand Vitara was awesome for offroad but had a bit too much body roll for daily city driving.
Q5 was fantastic (like driving a car), but overpriced (especially when the options are added in) and I'd be nervous to take it off road... couldn't justify the price.
Freelander was pretty good... but I'm not sure how it'll hold it's value.
XC60 was by far the best of the lot but ridiculously priced... and the resale would be abysmal (as is the case with all Volvos... their tagline is "Volvo for life" for a reason)
CR-V was a good compromise. It's a good softroader and is much more composed on the rough stuff than the X3. The finishes were good, pricing competitive (I bought a new one for R20K less than a year old 2nd hand one), and the service from Honda was pretty good. In addition they seem to hold their value really well over time.
The only issue I have with it is that the engine is a bit lazy, I'd prefer the 2.5T engine in the Volvo or the 3.2l in the Suzuki.
