So was going to get an ATV3 for R850.00 for my brother ... But looks odd?

You can’t jail break the 3rd gen ones- I have one and it’s a great paperweight

Meh, its good for netflix at least, but yea, not worth R850.

Dolby, you are better than that :o , you want quality , look around more for a better condition one if not a brand new one :D.

Your brother will thank you :p.

There's no 3rd Generation anymore and the 4th is huge overkill :(

His only requirement? He wants to iTunes bought songs on his HiFi. Doesn't care about Netflix or anything else right now

He's going to upgrade to Apple Music at some point and then this will be a paperweight.

The ATV4 isn't overkill at all, it's what they all should have been in the first place.

If it was <R500 and used as an Airplay host mostly then sure it would make more sense. Not for R850.

It's not really the price - it's even getting hold of one that's the issue! I've seen the odd one pop up at R700 but they are gone in days and it's a nightmare finding another. They seem pretty rare nowadays.

Sorry - on overkill I meant for him ;) Not in general. I think my ATV was the only Apple device I kinda liked (though I still got rid of it.…)

Apple Music is streaming rather than paying per title and downloading? ATV3 can't do that then? ATV4 can?

Nope no access to it on ATV3 and it’s the natural progression of things.

If he just wants airplay and doesn’t need an interface you could get away with an Airport Express and the 3.5mm output too.
