Buying a used vehicle

I've been checking auto trader for quite a while. Iv'e come to the decision that it's going to be the Peugot 206, Polo Playa or Corsa hatch (I use the Corsa utility for work and really am sick of it :P). Maximum I can fork out is R 60,000. Some opinions and views, on these three cars, would be appreciated. Any other mentions are welcome :)
 
On your budget and choosing between the three (although it grates me to say it) go for the Polo. Forget about the Peugot, maintenance and replacement costs will probably be a bit more expensive than the Polo, especially important with second hand vehicles. That said, you never know, buying a 2nd-hand car is like rolling a dice, you just don't know what you will get. The Peugot might give you years of trouble free driving, and the Polo might give you endless grief.

If you purely want to decide on maintenance cost, go for Polo, then Corsa, then Peugot. If maintenance cost is not a big worry for you, go for which ever you feel happiest with.
 
No opinion on the cars, but ...

Make sure you've got EVERY aspect of the deal in writing ...

I just bought a 2nd hand car from a dealer [auto trader advert] ... am very happy with the car itself but the paperwork & road-worthy!

I was verbally assured by the dealer at the time that they'd take care of everything and that there'd be no extra cost. After a month of waiting the car still isn't on my name & the roadworthy certificate hadn't arrived (after being assured that of course it had been through the test).

On enquiry ... no ... that's your problem ... it's not in our contract.

Guess what, I've no witness to the verbal assurances and it's my word against his ... and I don't have the money for a lawyer!

Don't get bitten like I was.
 
Thanks for the responses guys, any other vehicles you would recommend seeing as my choice is swinging to the polo? It's a pitty about the Peugot maintenance costs, parts etc. Theres some really good deals out there for them.

That's why there are good deals on them ;)
If you on a tight budget, stick to locally produced brands, i.e. VW, Opel, Toyota, Nissan, Merc, etc.
 
With older cars stick to VW or Toyota. There is more help around when things do go south, also parts are cheaper.
