buying a washing machine on gumtree

Hi all,

I want to suprise for a family member and what they actually need is a washing machine frontloader.
used to have one of those defy 7KG models before it broke down and we scrapped it.

I decided to go look at new machines, prices certainly shot up quite a lot since then,
cheapest equivalent I saw is a kelvinator one for 3K and then I saw those twin tub ones,

anybody use any of those before? coming from an automatic one is it a big difference using one of those?
(heard its all plastic and you need to constantly guard it).

another option Im exploring is buying 2nd hand automatic front loader similar to the one she had initially.
anybody done anything similar before? anything to watch out for?

any tips on getting a washing machine over gumtree/olx.
 
I'd say rather get something from a reputable dealer that you can take it back to if you have issues, unless you don't mind fixing yourself / forking out to get it fixed if it breaks down. It's always a risk buying on Gumtree/OLX unless the seller has a proof of purchase and the item is still under warranty.

still got some of the parts from the old machine, if we buy the same as what we had then its possible to fix?
for reference defy automaid 7KG she had, I saw a few on OLX for R500-R700, not sure exactly what condition their in.

anybody done something like this before?

also what about those twin tub machines? new there very cheap, but is it better than washing by hand?
heard you fill them manually and operate the pumps, motor by hand, no timers or anything.

Twin-tubs are very economical when it comes to small loads: you only use as much water as is required by the load.
 
If you do decide to buy second hand on a private sale. Make sure it's a good name brand of which you can get spares for easy. Defy, Bosch, Samsung and so on.
 
Come get mine for 500 bucks. Timer needs a nudge to start spin cycle, else is fine. 5 year old bosch, maybe aeg
