Well im sick and tired of not being able to get port forwarding to work on my stupid telkom marconi router. So ive decided to buy a normal ethernet adsl modem that I can plug into my hub and then dial up everytime I want to get onto the internet.

So I just want to check if ive got my facts right before shelling out for the new modem. Am I correct that with the dlink dsl-300T modem it is essentially just a dial up modem used for adsl that I can plug into my hub? So I would set up a normal dial up connection to the internet like I use to do when I had ISDN? And then I can use dc++ and mirc dcc etc without any hassles?

Just checking :)

Cheers

ADSL Modem

Why dont you rather get the D-Link DSL-504T Router.
4-Port router with ADSL Modem.

The netgear dg834 has all of the above for 700 from pcmall (unfortunately they take like a week to deliver)

yea, the netgear is pretty easy to use, i just got the 68whatetever one!

i don't get it, you can do that with the marconi modem, what you are trying to do is bridge mode pppoe conection, where the modem bridges the LAN IF with the dsl IF, and youre computer will then be responsible for dialling out on it.

marconi can be set to bridge mode I've done it with several, if I recall, in fact youre best bet for it is to simply reset it, and then try setup a pppoe connection through it on your local pc. I don't know if it works connected to a hub, it might need to be directly connected to your pc

Thanks for the replies. I realise that you can use bridge mode with the marconi, but ive tried that and it didnt work. Ive tried so many different things and im too frustrated to bother anymore. I can surf fine, but I cant use any p2p or mirc dcc which is one of the main reasons I got adsl.

Ive read all the threads on port forwarding as well as the instructions on portforward.com which explain the process on the marconi. nothing works.

If you use the bridge mode on the marconi device then the firewall and port forwarding on that device fall away - YOU are now the router and have to setup your firewall.

Getting a DSL-300T = using the marconi device as a PPPoE modem (bridge mode)

Well as I said, I have already tried to get it to work in bridging mode to no avail. But I think this might be easier than trying to get port forwarding to work. There's probably just one small thing I missed while trying to get bridging mode to work.

Could you possibly give me a step by step procedure on how to do this with the marconi? (Sorry I know im pushing my luck here). Or maybe there is a link?

trustworthy website with resonable prices to buy the Dlink 504T?
