Morning guys,

A friend of mine wants to buy a new tv for their living room. Requirements:

Budget - R10k
Lighting - medium/dim
Use - HDPVR, Blu ray player, sports.
Viewing distance - 2.5m to 3m
Viewing times - main tv so any time of day.
Size - 47"+

Think that's about it. It does not have to be a smart tv or anything like that.

Hope someone can help

Thanks

+-R9,999 Samsung PS51E550 51" FHD 3D plasma.

+1

If close by, pop by Makro. They sometimes have these 1-day specials. Apparently that is how I was able to buy my ps51e550 for just under R9k.
I know that retaillers roughly pay R8,5k for these TVs.

Thanks but that's a smart tv and the friend does not really need it. I think it will be money wasted on a function that won't be used at all so I would rather go with bigger and less functions. He also mentioned that it must be 3D.

Do you perhaps have more suggestions?

Nope, SMART is standard on that TV (introduced to the Samsung 51" FHD 3D plasmas with last year's D range IIRC) and there is nothing smaller for less. ;)

PS60E550 60" FHD 3D plasma is around R18,000...

There aren't really any TVs in that price range that are non Smart these days.

The 3 main (different) models to check out would be;

Samsung PS51E550 Plasma, glossy, active 3D
Samsung UA46ES6200 LED, semi-matt, active 3D
LG 47LM5800 LED, glossy, passive 3D

Samsung UA46ES6200 LED, semi-matt, active 3D

Just some banter on this for the OP, especially since his friend's room's lighting conditions are suitable for plasma. Another forumite's 3 year old 51" B 6 Series plasma smokes his brand new UA46ES6200 LED-LCD to the extent his wife is able to tell the difference between them. Now consider that reports are that the PSxxE550 is better than the PSxxD7000 7 Series...

I would not recommend LED-LCD to the OP. OP do not let your friend make the decision of judging on a bright showroom floor. Incorrect lighting conditions compared to his room and most likely aisle viewing distance opposed to 2.5m+, it will become a test of brightness and he will mistakedly walk out with LED-LCD.

Thanks guys but what I meant was, bigger tv in that price range, even if its an older model. I explained to him to not judge the tvs in the shop due to lighting etc...

51" FHD SMART 3D plasma is the biggest you'll get with a R10k budget.
