Hi all

I'm keen to buy another Mac, but not locally this time, tired of swallowing Core's price B$. Does anyone here have any advice regarding mail forwarding companies such as myus.com etc. or are there any other techniques to use in getting a Mac into South Africa at a reasonable price? Thanks in advance.

Have you looked at buying used? Lots of people go Mac, then can't get comfortable on the platform, and sell, taking a huge knock. What spec are you looking at? I know at least 2 guys with late '09 15" MBP Unibodies they're trying to get out off.

Thanks but I'm not looking at MBP's

You might want to take a look at http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?232053-27-quot-i7-iMac

I can't speak from experience but I would be very careful about directly importing very expensive consumer electronics, especially from the support/warranty point of view. As an example, I have a 15" MBP whose motherboard blew. The motherboard was replaced by the dealer, out of warranty, for free - but only because it came through Core (the motherboard had a known issue that Apple covered out of warranty).

Remember that even if you get it cheap overseas, it will most likely be stopped by Customs and you will land up paying duty & VAT which will probably bring the price close to SA retail.

Thanks for the info, but there aren't any import duties on computer hardware as far as I know, just the VAT.

(Price+10%) + 14%=Final cost
or
Price*1.1*1.4=Final cost

Then there is also a small clearing fee but it's a fixed value of something like R25.
