Hi there, I would like to hear your opinions on buying discontinued DSLR's. Anything wrong with buying a decent specced camera at a really good price even though it is old?
thanks.

Depends how old and how good the price is.

What camera?

i am looking at the nikon d80 for roughly d40 price.

what do you guys think of buying a better specced camera for roughly the same price as 2 models "lower" although it is being discontinued?

the nikon d80 has not been discontinued by nikon, if you are getting it at a d40 price say around R4000 then it is either a knock off of some sort, second hand disguised as new or it is stolen. even on the grey market a d80 will sell maybe R1500 to R2000 cheaper than a R10000 new and non grey market d80
in other words i would not touch it with a 10 foot pole.

R11k
vs
Nikon D60 + 18-55mm VR + 55-200mm VR Kit
R10k

(sorry, i meant D60, not 40)

to my knowledge, the d80 is being replaced by d90?

Go for it.

Depends on the features - which features are important to you. If you want the 1/500 sec flash sync, get the D40.

that is way too much stuff to go with a d80 and only be 11k so i would really question it. this deal sounds very fishy to me. you can go for it but remember if you get the camera and it breaks, then it will more than likely not covered by the nikon warranty in s.a. and you will have to pay for it to be fixed.

let me just give you an example of what it should cost new
d80 + 18-55 vr lens = R 9,495
55-200 vr lens = R 3,095 (source orms.co.za) orms is one of the cheapest around, you may be able to find the deal cheaper but it is only going to be about R500-1000 cheaper if you can find it cheaper.

with all the other stuff that you are getting then i really question it, it is too good to be true. i still think that you are going to get burnt, and i would bet my camera that your filters and your tripod are going to crap for that price and good filters and a good tripod do make a difference, and good ones do not come cheap.

the official nikon site says nothing about stopping production on the d80 so it is not discontinued. the d40x has been discontinued by nikon, so are you sure they are not trying to sell you a d40x or a second hand d80? that d60 price with the two vr lens does sound right in price though.

by the way you have not mentioned where this deal is, it would be nice to know where you are getting this so called killer deal.

ken rockwell says it has been dscontinued... or is being discontinued...
my question remains... will you buy a camera if you know it is being discontinued (essentially buying an old camera) at a good price ?

ken rockwell is a overopinionated arrogant moron.

Get at least 170000million other opinions before believing Ken Rockwell.

and bidorbuy is a place to be VERY wary of.

100% AGREED

the only person that agrees with ken rockwell is ken rockwell himself he does not say that nikon is discontinuing the d80 though.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d80.htm

"2008 WARNING: Don't buy the D80. The new D90 completely obsoletes it. If money matters, buy the almost identical D40, and if not, the D90 is a complete generation beyond the old D80. Please treat the rest of this review as an historical artifact, written in 2007." k. rockwell, 2008

he is actually telling people to buy the d40 (which he is nuts about and by the way ask anyone and they will tell you that it is nothing like the d80) instead of the d80 and you can't compair those two cameras they are both so different, it would be like me comparing my d60 to a d300 you simply can't.

to answer your question there is nothing wrong with buying discontinued cameras (within reason) people are still shooting away with their d50 and d70's and loving it. nikon is still going to fix them if they break, for a fee and you will still be able to find support for them on the web (not sure about any firmware updates though)

buying with bidorbuy your camera will not be covered under warranty in s.a. which means big money out of your pocket if something happens to it. good luck!

it says that d80 is replaced by d90 ?? anyway, who cares. the d80 is an old camera. bottom line. my question has been answered.

ken rockwell.... who cares what he is? it is just another opinion. just like the ones you give here.
:)

bidorbuy... i have bought a lot of stuff on bidorbuy & ebay and no problems thus far. have any of you who give so much negative remarks?

ken rockwell says it has been dscontinued...

Ken Rockwell saying anything is about as good Thabo Mbeki saying crime is not a problem. Maybe he's just bitter because he can't afford a D80?

Have a look at dpreview's side-by-side comparison. Higher resolution, higher frame rate, compatibility with AF lenses, larger viewfinder.

That says, the D40 is a very nice camera. I spent some time shooting with a friend's one the other night. Indoors blues band gig, low light. All she had with her was the 50mm f/1.8 D lens and even without AF, everything came out looking pretty good.

After all the negative remarks - especially scams - I've read about in this forum I doubt I'll ever purchase from BoB unless they offer complete insurance.
