I am looking to buy a Botswana domain. All the sites selling I have found look super dodgy.

You could email the guys at Web Crew. They're a South Africa based company and I've done plenty of business with them. I had a client inquire about a Namibian domain name and they were able to sort me out. They mentioned that they do other African TLDs also. Idk, it worth a shot. It'll cost you though - .bw domains are expensive

Have you maybe considered buying a .com domain instead of .bw in any case? In webmaster tools you can tell Google that you want to target Botswana (someone please correct me if this isn't a good idea!).

Registry price – the price a domain registrar is charged by the registries. It's not that the registrars are charging mega buck due to a lack of competition (although that plays a role), but the registry "fees" on .bw domains are more than .co.za domains. Ultimately, it is up to the registries how much they charge.
