Buying electricity with solar

So I heard a story from a colleague that if you don’t buy electricity for a month they can cut you off.

It sounds like bs to me.

I have prepaid in COC and haven’t bought electricity this month as my solar install carries me over and I have surplus units available in case of hectic load shedding.

Is there any truth to this?

I am on CoCT prepaid. Last time I bought elec was May 2023. So yes its BS.

Eskom did try to give me some attitude though for not buying every month when I reported a fault, but it could have been something made up by the call centre agent. Apparently they flag you if you don't buy every month, but I did tell them what a load of BS that is, they wanted to use it to say they cannot help me when I report a fault, since they ask you a lot of questions these days to try determine if you are an illegal connector.

They did quickly back off when I asked them to check my buying history.

If your area has a tier system ie pay R2.75 for first 350 units
Then 2.95 for next 350 units and next tier for in excess of 700 units

It may be a good idea to buy some every month on the lower tier to stockpile for reduced winter and bad weather days

Meaning any units you ever use from coct is at the cheapest rate

ie to build up a certain reserve tank of your choice

We do the same. Build up for winter.
