Hi All

I'm currently in the market for a GPU and initially was going to get a GeForce 1060 6GB-but came across a Asus 1070 STRIX 8GB for a bargain-seller claiming card is 5 months old with full 3 years warrantee and he has proof of all this, these cards start @ R8000+ but this one is a bargain for R5500.

My questions:
1. Seller needs to ship card to me, is there a way to make the process a little less dangerous/risky as I'm taking all the risk paying the full amount without anything to show for it?
2. I was thinking to only pay half upfront and the remainder once I receive the card. that way we both have some risk in the process or is this frowned upon? any ideas?
3. is it unfair for me to ask for pictures of said warrantee and/or invoice as well as a ID-copy to be on the safe side? will provide my ID as well; hopefully this will negate any risks?

any advice will be appreciated. :erm:

I personally wouldn't unless I could inspect the card.

Reason being, the prices of 1070s are high at the moment because of cryptocurrency mining. That 1070 should be selling for minimum R7000, because it is worth that much. Demand is that high. I bought a graphics card for R3750 new in January - slightly newer versions of those cards now sell for R7000.

So, it sounds too good to be true. I would personally walk away.

Another thing you can do - have some contact him and claim to be in the town where he claims to be. See where he claims to be now.

Where is he based? I would ask for photos of the card and Google image search to see if those photos show up elsewhere. Additionally, check his number on Truecaller and verify against what he tells you. Also, possibly a member in the area can check it out for you.

Walk away. Go look on Carbonite, and then ask some forum members to help with the deal.

https://www.paywithshepherd.com/ you will quickly find out whether or not you are being taken for a ride. ;). He will be reluctant to use this service as he will have to ship the item before getting paid and only get paid once you have received what you ordered.

Straight up tell him you will only use this service the end, take it or leave it, win some, loose some deals, be rather safe then sorry, you can always hop onto carbonite.co.za plenty of hardware in a relative safe enviroment with trusted members.

Additionally I wouldn't buy secondhand GPU's have been burned on more then one occasion.

sounds like I need to skip this

guy has 2 of these cards selling both for R10000 or R5500 separate, says no mining involved, some sort of graphics designer wanting to upgrade to 1080ti's. his OLX location is somewhere in the EC near East-London.

Got of the phone with him now; Based in Kimberley-named Shawn, any fellow form-users in that area? Seems he and a few buddies have started a business together.

He might just be ignorant of their true value. It is possible. But, the risk is high for you.

If you could go inspect them, or if somebody you trust could go, then do that. Without that, I would not buy them.

anything specific I need to look for without even actually testing it? It's Gariep-show this weekend in Kimberley and I can use this as a excuse to take the family on a road-trip to Kimberley and to inspect the card.

I would want to see it powered up and running honestly. But dude...I would just get on Carbonite.co.za and look there honestly.

Hmmm. Well familiarize yourself with photos of the card from the Internet - should help you spot a fake.

Best thing to do is install it into a PC and start it up. use GPU-Z to verify what it is. You don't need to install drivers, just bring GPU-Z along.

If you want to buy the card, verify that it is not dead, or anything else. I've heard people buy GPU's that is totally legit and everything, but dead.

3 month old cards, 2 of them, and he is ignorant of the price? I call BS.

I would start by asking why he had 2 in a graphics machine. SLI/CrossFire much on a graphics desktop? Graphics designers, most of the time, does not use gaming GPUs, as there are dedicated GPUs for that.

madness.... walk away, there will always be other deals, failing that... sell your house in Bloemfontein and move to Joburg :)

rather save for an extra month or two and then buy a new card, peace of mind

** no one sells 2x 1070's in SLI and wants to buy 1x 1080ti to make pretty little graphics for work, ummm me call bull, the performance of the 2x 1070's will be say 1.5x that of 1x 1080, a ti might take it down to say 1.2x, the 2x 1070's would still outperform the 1080ti in almost all configurations, it just wouldn't be financially feasible **

He genuinely might not know about the value of the cards, and his need for a GTX 1080 Ti might be genuine as well. Some graphics programs don't do well with SLI. If you can go see the seller in person, and get him to verify that the cards are working by running something like Firestrike, AND produce the original invoice, I think you're good to go.

Luckily, you're out of the Groenewald's domain, so scammers in your area will not be commonplace.

Luckily the deal fizzled out, at least had a good weekend!

Guy wanted R2500 upfront as deposit to 'secure' the 1080 and the remainder when I get the card on Saturday. Told him no card no payment, especially no deposit upfront. I don't know him from jack. after various voice-notes in whatsapp from him, offering a copy of his ID and card-invoices, but wait for it, copy of his fiancés payslip, not his own, I called bull**** and told him I can give him the R2500 upfront when collecting the card at his house and the remainder once I verified the card is working 100% he confirmed its a no go as he is taking all the risks; 5 long replies from him via whatsapp confirming we should trust each other blah blah blah I told him not interested and he should find another buyer. Saturday morning he send a whatsapp 06:10 confirming if I pay him R250 he will come to Bloemfontein and deliver the card himself-then I knew 110% this guy was a fake/scammer. tsek

thanks for all the info; will try Carbonite next...
