So, what would be the hazards of buying an iphone 4 in the states? I'm making a trip over there in November, and thinking of picking one up. They're only $499 for the 16GB one over there.

So, could i pick one up and pop my vodacom sim in once i get back?

Nope, they're network locked to AT&T unfortunately. I highly recommend you don't get one there. Get an iPad in the states.
If you get an iPhone, get it here, or Europe, or Hong Kong or wherever they sell it network unlocked.

i just came back from Miami and bought 1 , make sure its 4.01 so u can jailbreak and carrier unlock :)

Yeah but there's no way to check. If it has 4.0.2 or later you're screwed. I find it irritating to be dependent on an unofficial jailbreak and unlock too.

Really, don't bother getting one from the States - such a pain to keep up with the jailbreaking and unlocking all the time. Save yourself the headache and get it from an unlocked country!!!
Also, keep in mind that the sales tax still has to be added to the iPhone if you buy it from there. If you do decided to get it from the States - you've been warned ;)
