Hi can anyone please advise me. I'm considering buying a 2nd hand macbook pro 13 inch late 2011. Its an i5 with 2.4 ghz processor speed, 10gig memory, 512 VRAM, 239.2 GB solid state drive - for R8000. Its battery cycle count is 1010. I'm a textile designer and really need a laptop or desktop pc to work on.

I have a similar laptop - I would try get it cheaper though. As long as its decent in terms of its condition then it would not be a bad choice only because you can upgrade its internals. One of the few Macs that you can. Ram can be pushed to 16gb and bigger SSD can be added. Try get it for cheaper and use the extra cash to buy a newer battery for it and you are golden.

hell no

stay away from 2011 mac book pros
there is a graphics problem = R7000 repair

R8k for a 2011 macbook pro is lunacy

R8000 for a 7 year old machine? I have the exact same year MacBook with an i7 CPU and 16GB RAM, and even the new cheap i5's far outperform my machine.

R8k is a rip-off for such an ancient machine. Much better options out there. That's also a very high battery count. Not worth it.

I have the same MBP with i5 and 8Gb ram and 500gb HDD, it's dreadfully slow now (even after reinstalls and hard drive half empty).

I'd stay away of paying 8k for this, and rather buy a more recent PC.

reinstalled back to snow leopard - it is now as quick a my brand new R40k mbp

grab a empty hard drive, install snow leopard and check for difference in performance (or maybe your current hard drive is playing up)

Thanks so much everyone. The guy was kind enough to lend me the mac to test for a day. Ran a apple hardware test and only found a problem with one of the memory cards. Other than that it ran smoothly and without issues. I will definitely ask for a drop in price.

Move on buddy... it's a terrible deal. There are much better deals out there.

But at the end of the day it's your money to waste.

anything over R5k would be too much

Replace with an SSD, and it will be a new machine.
Perfectly good / usable for another few years after that.

I have an SSD in mine, and it's getting long in the tooth. Mine is the i7 and has 16GB of RAM.

The i5 that OP wants is 7 generations old. It scores 2500 in Passmark, of which a modern i3 scores double that. Even the new Celeron's score 3000+

Lasting a few more years? If MS word and emails is all you want to do. I just don't think spending R8k on such old hardware is wise at all.

At that price, you can have my Early 2011 MBP for R7999 :crylaugh:

Have a look at Digicape's classified for decently priced, pre-owned Macs - https://www.digicape.co.za/classifieds
