Buying new car or second hand car

Hi guys
I am looking to upgrade my current car and my budget is between R250 000 and R275 000. I have looked at the Golf 7 1.4Tsi Comfortline and it seems quite good. I just want to know if any of you guys have the car and your thoughts?
The other option is buy a second hand Audi A3. I want to know if that is a good idea in terms of maintenance, etc

Always new over second hand. Especially when it comes to those German brands. Repair costs will be exorbitant.
 
Always second hand over new.

As long as its low mileage and under service plan you will be saving a lot of money
 
Always buy new so that us poor sods can get a chance at owning flashy cars at more reasonable costs :p.
 
It depends on many variables and there are pros and cons to both.

Obviously by buying 2nd hand you let the guy who bought it new take the biggest knock. Whilst this is true it often doesn't translate into much if you buy from a dealership as they need to add their mark-up and all sorts of other charges for jack. When bought my last car new in 2010 2nd hand offerings were just too close to the new car price so I just bought new. If you could find a nice 2nd hand car for a good price with 20 - 40k KM on the clock that would be ideal.

If you are buying cash and have got some change to keep in case something goes wrong then there is absolutely nothing wrong with buying an older car, chances are you may never need to spend a cent on repairs and you score big time. The problem comes in with retards who take a 72m residual on a 5 year old turbo charged BMW and then cry when it breaks..

Are you referring to a 2nd hand new shape Audi A3 or the outgoing model? The new shape is very new so I can't imagine there will be too many going for good prices so I presume you mean the outgoing A3. Once the new shape of any vehicle comes out the older models value drops like a rock.. (which actually isn't such a bad thing if you intend on keeping the car for 10 yrs) but still if its New Golf vs Old A3 I'd go Golf.
 
I traded in a 2010 Golf 6 1.4 Tsi Comfortline (40 000km's) during April for a new Golf 7 of exactly the same spec. There is just no comparison! The new version is like a totally different car.
I appreciated that they finally added Bluetooth (that has been standard in a Picanto)and Colour touch screen radio. The interior does have a more upmarket feel to it, compared to the 6.
I am even towing a small caravan lately and it has plenty of torque with low fuel consumption. For a change, I am getting closer to the advertised consumption.
I did look at the new A3, but, at the advertised prices, the Audi is a 1.2 Tsi with 2 doors is priced similar to the Golf 7 1.4 Tsi with 4 doors
 
I have never purchased a new car - ever. Let someone else devalue the thing and buy one 2 or 3 years old and save a bundle of cash.
I am on my fourth Audi now and no problems (VW fan prior to my string of Audi's).

Audi pre-owned extend the warranty by 40k kms/2 years.

I got my current 2007 A6 3.2 FSi Quattro in 2009 for R275k. It was like new. Final payment in May and no intention of trading it again. This thing is simply a machine and gives me zero issues.
I did however score on this one as Audi advertised it as a 2006 model which had a retailer value of just over R300k. When I took delivery they told me it was a 2007 model and value was R420k. SCORE!!
Unfortunately I had to now pay insurance premiums on a 2007 model - which back then was a whack.

In his price range he must be looking at a 2013 A3 with less than 15 000km on the clock, which means it is still under maintenance, by the time it is out, the parts will be cheaper. Not as cheap as the same generation polo but cheaper than a Mercedes

I have only had 2nd hand Audi's too. You ,might get a few issues, but every cent is paid for under motorplan. You can now even extend the motorplan to up to 7yrs or up to 200 000kms or both for around R20k per 20 000km or per year.

I could never stomach the loss you experience from buying a new car. That said, it would make sense to buy a new car if the spec you want just isn't available or if it is a brand new model with no second hand examples around.

That doesnt mean the price will be the same. We all know that because VW owns Audi, they will use the same parts to save costs, but that doesnt mean they will charge customers the same prices. Market segmentation, remember - Audi is more of a premium brand than VW.

OP - its really up to you. Buying a second hand car makes the most financial sense, but then you dont get the feeling of having a new car. You already know your budget, so I think have a look at what you can get in your budget, and factor in repair costs. Does the base price of a new Golf 7 include motor plan? What will a used Golf 6 or Audi A3 cost with motor plan? What will your resale value be in either case, and how long do you plan to keep the car?

Err.. wasn't your car for sale until you realized you couldn't get what you were asking?

Repairs costs will be exactly the same, if not cheaper for the second hand car.

Maintenance costs on the other hand are something altogether different and could still be a better deal depending on the age of the second hand car and whether or not it comes with any maintenance/service plan remaining.


Personally I bought a car with almost a hundred thousand on the clock and a warranty and got a hell of a lot more for my money than the dinky toy I would have gotten brand new.
