Hi Guys

I need some help. Where can I buy Microsoft Visual Studio Pro 2005 from in SA? I see www.take2.co.za sells it (for hellishly expensive prices), but are out of stock. Any advice on shops that sell this software?

Thanks in advance.

Have you looked at the express edition? Its free and will cover most of your basic development needs.

Other ways of getting VS:

1) MSDN Professional - costs about R7000 but adds a lot of value
2) Microsoft Empower (https://partner.microsoft.com/40011351) - about R2700.

This includes:

Up to five (5) software licences for:
Microsoft Windows Vista or Microsoft Windows XP
Microsoft Office 2007 or 2003

One (1) software license and up to five (5) Client Access Licenses (CALs) for:
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (Standard or Enterprise Edition)
Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server (Standard or Enterprise Edition)
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (Standard or Enterprise Edition)
Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2007 or 2003

Development and Testing License: MSDN Premium Subscription and five (5) user licenses
One (1) MSDN Premium Media Kit (DVD)

Please Note: This is only available to ISVs and has certain requirements. Look online.

Note 2: You can only use this deal for 2 years. After that it you can't continue.

Yes thats brilliant, its unlikely you'll move from your microsoft architecture after your 2 years of licensing expires. No more freebies then.

In my opinion that is why Windows is the most used operating system with the most software available to it today, it's easy for beginner developers to create new programs. Their IDE's are pretty decent if you ask me, easy to learn, use and install. Unlike Linux (what a nightmare!, well at least for me as a C++ developer, only thing cool about Linux C++ programming is ValGrind), can't speak for Mac since I don't know what kind of IDE's are available.

On the topic of the VS Express Editions, they are pretty darn decent and you can develop commercial software and sell it as well (for the amazing price of R0).

Btw. Do students actually pay for VS? They just gave it to us for free....
