Hi people

I need to buy some assorted weights (dumbbells). Places I checked so far have ridiculous pricing. 100s of Rands for a piece of scrap grade metal.

Any walk in shops in PTA with reasonable pricing?

Might also make sense to buy a complete set / adjustable set. Anybody know what the pricing is on those?

Weights are simply just expensive. Not sure why either as it's only iron.

Look in the junk mail- exercise equipment is one of those things people have the greatest intentions to use, but they just end up collecting dust. You can often find some good deals.

Second hand weights go for around R15-00/kg at Pawn Shops, but are really really scarce. If this is a long term project of building up your gym, make friends with the shop owner and get him to phone you ASAP once they get some.

The cheapest I found new was at Mr. Price Sport, around R20-R25/kg or much more at other places.

That link of R16/kg seems about right. One stop shop at a very reasonable price I would say.

Mr. Price Sport would be my first stop. They are a lot more affordable than just about any other sports retailer.

how are the things sold / packaged for transport ?
are you just expected to drag the things to your car ?

Def some good suggestions all round.

Its kinda weird that that its priced per kg, no? I mean surely a 2kg weight doesn't cost twice as much to make?

Kinda. I've got a gym membership, but its kinda p1ssing me off right now. Stupidly expensive (~500pm + R20 petrol each time)...plus I don't actually go because it takes so much time (travel/gym/travel). Much easier to just use what I've got at home. Naturally 24m contract FTL.

It costs a lot to transport heavy items, thats where the price comes from

They are also a bit more expensive than Mr. Price Sport, coming in at R23/kg.

I personally went with gumtree and scored big time a couple months back.

Yup, second hand is the only way to go if you want to stretch your budget a bit.
