bwana's new camera

If you want fast : 1DMkIII

Otherwise go for the 5D mk2

It is much more complicated than that :p

It's not simply the high framerate that makes the 1D special, it's almost like comparing a C-Class mercedes to an S-Class. The 5D is a fantastic camera but the 1D is "The Daddy". Build quality is better, better autofocus, dual card slots(big one this). Canon really should have used the 1 Series autofocus in the 5D!!

Can't expect to get all the bells and whistles for a tuppence :D

Bwana, what are you shooting that you require the high ISO?

Your grin is noted, but I have to point out that the 5DmkII's price-tag can hardly be consider a tuppence, especially when you consider that the camera it competes with (Nikon D700) offers far superior AF for a lower price.

I thought the 5D was always more a portrait camera, so the super dooper AF on the 1's was largely not necessary in that role?

I want to shoot more sports.

You could see it in a different way: it became more widely used for portrait work, because it could do that genre well. Imagine if Canon had given it the more sophisticated AF from the 1D series, and a higher frame rate, what the 5D would have been known for now.

And before you say something about stealing sales from the high-end bodies, the D700 has 51 point system, same as the D3, and does 8fps with the grip attached, yet, D3 bodies are still selling like sweet cakes, so it clearly hasn't cannibalised the high-end sales.

I assume low light or under flood lights, never tried so don't know to much about it.
A fast lense might also give you good results and SS.

Koffie, not sure on what they were matching up against from Nikon but I suppose it boils down to how the company wants to market their models, and cost.
I got the impression though that is was desgined more for studio work rather than in the field from some forums. Perhaps incorrectly so.
See the 5D was also released long before the D700 or D3, maybe that had something to do with it?

I wish I could get an affordable body with the same AF features as a 1D Mk111, especialy for small birds in flight, they are frikkin quick critters. ;)

I think the (original) 5D was more intended to be an entry-level full frame camera. It fits in (ignoring the sensor and spot metering) somewhere between a rebel and a 20D with some features on the way to the 30D thrown, and some other things left out (environmental sealing, idiot modes). For interest's sake, Canon never classified it as a professional camera, despite the specifications giving that impression. Anyway, whatever they were thinking, I just wish they thought about bringing the AF system on par with the 40D/50D in the new model.

As I mentioned above, my complaint about not updating the AF pertains to the 5DmkII.

So you did, my apologies.
They were all released / announced around the same time, Nikon was in a giving mood it seems then.

I think its more that Canon was delayed/clueless/idiotic. Its not like they had to research a completely new tech. The tech was already there in their other previous generation and current generation (50D) models. Rumors are also that now the next replacement for the xxD series will have more AF points and possibly more cross type sensors. So its going to look like the 5D MKII has severly crippled AF compared to a lower xxD model.

It already has. They could have just dropped a FF sensor into the 50D (like they did with the 20D) and left everything else untouched. I think more people would have appreciated the superior AF than the video.

Luckily, I dont have a 5D then ;) one model to overlook, which in reality I would've done anyway, and gone straight for the throat of the 1DMk111. There were AF issues with a few models of that camera as well in bright light, think they are resolved though, a few people on ODP returned them and resorted to using there old 40D's instead.

I think I've decided on the 1DMkIII . . . unless something new comes out while I scrape up the cash. I might get it in the UK when I'm there for summer -if so I've got time.
If you want video, buy a video camera.
You enjoy carrying a camera and a camcorder at the same time - let alone switching between the two? No thanks - I welcome video.
