New, modern and safe commuter trains will hit the tracks next year, Communications Minister Faith Muthambi said on Thursday.

Briefing the media in Pretoria following Cabinet's fortnightly meeting the day before, she said the executive welcomed the Passenger Rail Agency of SA's massive rail revitalisation programme.

"Prasa will spend R51 billion over the next 10 years to procure 600 top-class trains for... South Africa."

A total of 580 of these would be manufactured locally, at a new R1bn factory to be established in Dunnotar, outside Nigel, in Ekurhuleni.

"The 600,000 square metre manufacturing facility is designed to house the manufacturing plant, a training facility and a fully fledged industrial park."

The project would create 8088 direct jobs, plus many more indirect work opportunities.

"The first [new] Prasa train is expected to hit the track in 2015," Muthambi said.

Anybody got details of these 'new' trains? Is it a completely new design or still build on the old platform?

This sounds nice. Let's hope the facility in Nigel amounts to something.

I'm just wondering, how much of the problems that our rail system has is because we need new trains?

In the meantime the biggest Class action in South African history will begin against Transnet. On the 21st of July I think.

Time to hold on to that money, you are going to have to back pay a lot of people.

A whole lot, and new signalling and and and...
I think didn't express myself too clearly; the article only speaks of new trains and that made me wonder of the scope of this project. "Passenger Rail Agency of SA's massive rail revitalisation programme" sounds great, but I'm just wondering if it's massive enough.

Guess I'll go have to find some more details... :)

Gautrain = Bombadier; PRASA = Alstom

Isn't Bombadier & Alstom a consortium, hopefully no underhand deals going on again....

Those designs of the trains on BDLive and southafrica.info very much the same...
