Parts of Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, were without electricity on Sunday after a substation exploded, the City of Tshwane said.

"It has been established that the blast occurred as a result of [a] cable theft attempt," spokesman Selby Bokaba said in a statement.

The explosion, which happened around 11am at the Soshanguve K section substation, left residents in sections K, M, H and F without power.

Residents living in sections IA, FF, DD, and BB were also without power due to the IA substation tripping because of the explosion.

"Technicians from the city of Tshwane's energy and electricity division have been hard at work and managed to back feed substation IA," Bokaba said.

Power was later restored to sections FF, DD, BB and IA.

He said sections K, M, H and F were still without power, which was expected to be restored on Monday.

The city apologised for the inconvenience caused.

Substations explode cos of no maintenance you chop.

You didn't read the whole article did you? Yes, infrastructure in SA is poorly maintained, but in this instance it was the work of some miscreant.

And the lack of maintenance isn't due to some other miscreant? :D

What proof is there that it was "cable theft"?
I don't believe the media, nor do I believe any commentary from a utility.

If the substation really "blew" as they claimed it did, they'd be in for a transformer replacement, which takes 2-3 days. In the old days they did it in 12 hours.

The 11kV / 66kV cable likely got wet, thanks to this incessant rain.

When I read "Section bla, bla, bla bla" I just think:

Jabu wanted a black label so stole the cable.

Oh yes, cutting a cable at that kind of voltage... without injury???? ain't gonna happen.
