Hi All,

I would like to know how possible it is to cache web content locally - Steam games and updates, Windows updates, Antivirus updates, Youtube, POP3 messages and just about anything that goes through my internet connection.

My Linux box is running Ubuntu 13.10 and mainly acts as my NAS, print server & remote torrent client. I would also like to set it up as a cache as I have 12 people connected in my network (+- 20 devices). Some of us are connected through wireless links and some of us are connected via gigabit. Basically its my house connected to my tenants granny flat and a few friends connecting through wireless. Most of us have ADSL but not all of us have uncapped connections.

I would like to know what would be the best way to setup my server as a local cache for web content?

Thanks

Web content is easy, squid and off you go.

"Steam games and updates, Windows updates, Antivirus updates, Youtube, POP3 messages" - These are all very complicated

It can be done in squid, (except pop3, take that out of your list), it will break every now and then, and you need to update the logic.

Google for "redirectors and store rewrites" to cache youtube/windows etc

Follow something like: http://www.danscourses.com/Linux-Fundamentals/install-a-configure-squid-in-ubuntu.html for squid, this will cache browser stuff (savings will hit about 30%)

Then once you have it working, go for the rest.
