Call for Tuks name change

One would assume that the reputation of a good university will be carried over to the new name, after all it is the same institution, or is the Academic world so dumb :D that they will not recognise that - I think not

I don't care about this name change or any other one for that matter - I have given up all hope of the anc not squandering money on frivolous endeavors - but you cannot pretend that there is no value in an established brand. To say otherwise is to be naive or disingenuous.

The ANC is really pushing the Afrikaners into retaliation.

Just let the things in PTA be... This isn't going to end nice for any side
UP is no longer an Afrikaner University. Numbers for afrikaans classes are dwindling as it is. :D

Cape Town gets ruled by the DA, then the ANC tries to intervene and take it away.

The Freedom Front + has won the elections at UP for several years and then the ANC tries to intervene.

Great thing this 'democratic' country of us, hey?

They can call Mamelodi Campus that name if they want. If it can't be done because of it's interegrated nature into UP, then surely the ties can be severed.

I got my qualifications from the Unversity of Natal. It's now called Universtiy of KwazuluNatal. Big deal:p I don't actually care what happened thereafter as it hardly makes a diference in my life. I'm not a student anymore, I've got bigger things to worry about. Why don't we let the students worry about the names of their university.
Natal -> KwazuluNatal -> Kwazulu

They are half-way to their goal.:D

Just like Nelson Mandela Bay, Incorporating Port Elizabeth/Uitenhaige etc. In time it will just be Mandela.

Grahamstown is the same. Makana Municipality inc. Grahamstown, Cradock etc.
Bit of a falsehood in my eyes. Sneeky even ... typical..

Okay lets argue the point.

Reasons not to change:
Universities have limited funds at their disposal and their funds can be put to much better use.

This will result in even more racial tension

It will disrupt classes(marches for and agianst)

The current govt. had no hand in building the Uni so they should have no right in deciding it's name.

The city is still known as Pretoria and the Uni is in Pretoria.

Reasons to change:
Free publicity for the ANC
Yeah, what he said.

Er.., I don't think PASMA is the same as ANC:p

It's easy to keep on demanding things if you aren't the one paying for it.

Tax money should not be used for crap like namechanges when we have real problems to deal with.

How about they make a namechange fund and let it work on donations, then we will see how many people really want a namechange and how important it is to the public.

Best Idea I've heard regarding namechanging!

Those who want names changed should be forced to go on a fundraising effort to pay for them - otherwise status quo.

LMAO. Give proof for your mindless mumbling.
you must be the one doing the mindless mumbling around here. My wife just graduated from there I know what I'm talking about. Look at their student profile here

UP Student Profile
Considerable transformation has taken place over the past few years, with the result that the University has changed from a mainly white, Afrikaans university, to a national university in the true sense of the word, accessible to all South Africans.

During 2005 38 499 residential students (compared to 28 093 in 2000), were registered for contact teaching at the University.

Of this number, 28 252 were undergraduates (compared to 20 211 in 2000), and 10 247 were postgraduates (compared to 7 882 in 2000). The gender composition was 47% male and 53% female students. There were 60% white students and 40% black students.

As regards language preference, 60% of the undergraduate and almost 70 % of the post graduate students prefer their tuition in English.

This is 2 years old

Some more up to date info might help. And I'm talking about full time students.

I graduated from TUKS and this started many years ago, so I totally agree with you!

I'm afraid up to date info will not be in your favour either as transformation is going forward and not the other way.
Most of the undergrads are fulltime anyway. Two years ago 60% of those preferred their tuition in English

You are talking to student from UP. And I know you perceptions of dwindling must be very different from mine. Some Afrikaans people prefers their tuition in English, because the rest of the business world is mostly English.

Let's say more than than 10 000 students prefer their tuition in Afrikaans. HOW IS THAT DWINDLING? LOL

And what is that exactly ??

Lemme guess -- your wife and others turned up, not knowing classes were in Afrikaans (Doh!). She then toyi-toyied until they got their way :D
Actually NO. My wife enrolled there for undergraduate in 2000 and they had English classes already. Transformation in the institutions of higher learning was always ahead of the rest of the country whereas uneducated people tend to hang on to their racist bigotry for longer.
