Hi All

Hopefully someone can assist me.

I want to make use of a program on the PC that will read and then pop up the caller's ID (usually linked to Outlook address book).

Firstly I of course need the modem (Intel 536EP with latest XP driver) to be able to real Telkom's called id info. ( I have subscribed). Using XP's Hyperterminal I enter AT+vcid=1 to activate the caller id in the modem. When monitoring an incoming call all I get is 'RING' 'RING'

Clearly the modem is not reading Telkom's ID info.

Can anyone help please? (Telkom can't)

Thank you

Hey basil, it seems like a really cool idea and I hope someone can help you, sorry for the useless comment ;)

I use an old M-Web Big Black Box modem I had lying around and it works great, pity it's an external modem though.

The Duxbury modems from a few years back also supported caller ID in South Africa but the new ones no longer do, apparently there wasn't a high enough demand for this feature. I phoned the local Duxbury technical support a couple of months ago and they said that they have a firmware upgrade that can be uploaded to support caller ID on their new modems but that you would need to bring the card in to be upgraded (not sure why they can't just release the firmware).

I also phoned Mecer who informed me that none of their modems support caller ID in SA.

One of the other things that can be quite useful is if you have a Skype Box connected to your phone line it can show caller ID information for your Skype calls, this still requires a modem with caller ID though.

Sometimes it is necessary to enter an AT command in order to enable you modem to support caller ID, the relevant commands as well as how to test if your modem supports caller id can be found here.

Lastly note that just because the description on the box states that the modem supports caller ID doesn't mean that it will work in SA, there are different forms of caller ID depending on which country you are in. It is also worthwhile browsing the driver sites/forums to see whether or not you can find an updated firmware for your modem to support caller ID.

The above is a copy of my post in the "Modems that support caller id?" thread on the TivoZA forum from Dec 2005.

okay... some useless info to determine if telkomis actually sending the data, without the aid of a CID device.

Your phone will ring once, there will be a short delay and then ring twice...

the reason, during the delay, the FSK'ed data of the caller ID, called number and data are pumped down the line.

if you first ring is two rings, call Telkom and tell 'em it's not activated.

Hey guys
Now i need your help and hopefully get this sorted... tried a couple of modems the latest is a Duxbury PCI V92 Modem. Using XP's Hyperterminal I enter AT+vcid=1 to activate the caller id in the modem and it gave me the Ok - all othr strings suggsted on the net gives me an error. So i take it that the latest modem is supporting caller id.

Subscribed to Telkom's IDcall - It's working on my line (Tested it with a panasonic cordless phone)

Testing the modem in hyperterminal only gives me ring ring ring....

Can someone please let me know what modem i must buy (again) to make this work. Telkom is rarther useless in supplying any support.

Rathr fedup with this issue.... Do hope you can help

Regards
Francois
