Calling all PS3 vs Xbox Forumites - Urgent Help Needed

O.K here is the deal.

I have heard A LOT of negative things about the Lite-On drive in the 2008 Xboxes. I didn't really care about that until I realised that both my Xboxes (both's DVD drive only lasted 3 months) had Lite-On drives. So obviously the Lite-On drive is a massive failure.

That aside, here is the question:

Do I even go out and buy a new Xbox??? Because a new Xbox will have the same drive and, again, last 3-6 months. I sent my Xbox to a Xbox repair guy, who told me that it would cost R800 for the drive. I REALLY don't want to pay that kind of money for a DVD drive... So now obviously the warranty is voided because it has been opened... so no swop outs.

I personally refuse to buy an Xbox on a "I hope it does not break within a year" basis. That is ****ing rediculous.

SO, do I:

1 - Buy a new xbox

2 - Wait until M$ realises that their DVD drives are bull**** and start using good ones

3 - Buy a PS3

4 - Get a dog

If you recommend getting a PS3, please:

1 - Tell me if it breaks as much as the Xbox

2 - If it breaks, is it also such a retarded process of getting it replaced

Your repair guy is ripping you off.

For R800 you could buy a replacement Samsung drive and fit that seeing as though you seem to need to open your console for some reason (drive modding I presume?)
 
Looking at your sig, I don't think Maestro will be ripping you off. Unfortunately the drive seems to be the most expensive thing to replace. Depending on your existing investment in the xbox(s), i.e. games, accessories, etc. ,replacing the drive might still be the best option
 
7: Stop messing about with it.

As far as I know, you can send your purchased (unmodded - that is, unopened) Xbox to MIDigital (?).

Should be ok.

I apologise for my (perhaps) inaccurate response, as I use a PS3.

Piracy does not pay - the only rezason for opening a xbox in the first place.

O and you most likely found out after opening your xbox that a lite-on drive can not be modded.

that is the only problem with the lite-on drive up to a few days ago - unmoddable.

Forgive my ignorance but what is a lite-on drive? A DVD drive?

Its a brand of dvd roms used in the xbox 360 consoles.
Other brands incude Philips, Samsung etc.

The Lite-on drives are the latest used by Microsoft because of their 'un-flashable status'
Which has recently been undone. (23 December 2008)

The new xbox consoles are actually much more reliable than the first and 2nd release consoles. They use lower power hungry cpu's and gpu's and therefore create less heat, but with the same performance, if not more. (jasper motherboard)

They are even talking about making an xbox where the cpu and gpu are one. (ETA??) Which should be interesting.

and before anybody asks, Kreon drives are only useful if you want to 'rip' your original xbox 360 games via your pc. they are not used in the xbox 360.

A KREON is actually a certain model Samsung drive which is flashed with a custom firmware called KREON.

You can get xbox 360 dvd rom drives off gumtree for like R400.

I saw Bolt yesterday with my gf and my opinion now at moment is soo biased so get a dog :D but seriously stop modding the box and it should work for abit longer :)
 
I'm confused. Where does the OP state that *he* opened the box ? He said "I sent my xbox....." followed by "So now obviously the warranty is voided because it has been opened" . My assumption was "opened by said repairman to inspect drive" or does that sentence have multiple interpretations ? :)

He must have known about the warranty, and that opening the box would void it.

By sending it in to have it opened, he contravened the conditions contained in the contract.
