Hi guys firstly i wanna just say that admire you guys for taking the time out to help technically challenged people like myself. You have been gifted for such a time to demonstrate you skills or lack of to a generation that never quite caught on to what was obviously inevitable (information age).
But my question is this simply .... i have been privileged to be paying Telkom lots of my money so that i can get adsl running so that i can speak to my girl. You see she is in Europe and i thought skype would be the best, However we speak allot of data. Like 500mb for every 7 hours. I know that there is a South African MSN. And i can get 30 gig local for a fraction of the price as what you get international.

My question is this : If i were to by the local 30 gig account could my girlfriend who has international internet phone to me through MSN messenger and dial into a South African server?

Or if you were me what would you do ? I need to speak but it costs so much if you add up line rental and all that ? Is there anyway i can chat where i dont use that much data for calls internationally or is there a way that i can get the local 30 gig and she can dial into a south african server so that i can chat with her ?

Please your adive would be much appreciated thx and go well .....:D

Get a 30gb local account, get her to vpn onto your machine, get a freeware local lan chat application.

On a local account your IP Address is simply not visible from the international net, so, she will not be able to establish a VPN connection. Well, that was the setup the last time I tried that, like 4 months ago.

You could create an account for you and her on a local teamspeak server, but I don't know what the peeps who run the teamspeak server think of this way of using the server. Search for teamspeak server south africa and have a word or 2 with the admins.

Are you sure you use about 500MB every 7hours on skype? Sounds a bit steep.

i think skype and any SIP protocol will use about that amount of data....it seems correct...
to save data u could use another long way of doing it....
get urself a nokia with wifi and then download fring and use fring via wifi over ur adsl....fring though using skype/sip etc uses a fraction of the data....

or cancel ur adsl and use fring over 3g on your nokia - - do the maths first..
fring on symbian uses only about 133.17kb per min and 7.99mb per hour so 7 hours would be 56mb and if you on a data bundle that costs give or take 40c per mb = R22.40 for your 7 hours.

500mb verses 56mb...fring is a sure winner

According to Skype bandwidth usage is between 3-16kbs during a call so unless my math is way out at the max rate it will be 56.25mb per hour so a 1gb pay as you go account (approx r70) will give you over 18 hours of non stop talk time. :)

while i use skype/sip, my dumeter shows upload and download speeds of 80kbps (up and down) = 160kbps....one minute shows a total usage of 1.2mb (this is on Voipraider(SIP))so 7 hours would be 504mb which seems correct

seems WINDOWS is the bugger.....
Fring over Symbian or UIQ uses 7.99mb per hour but over Windows mobile uses 14.5mb per hour
http://www.fring.com/fring_is/why_fring/

and the same SIP call (based on experience) on Windows uses 72mb per hour

does anyone know a windows based SIP provider (like voipbuster etc) that uses less data? something closer to what fring uses?
