Currently in my 3rd year of accounting articles and shall be moving off my parents medical aid. Currently we are on momentum, not sure the exact plan but its a comprehensive plan near the top.

I am struggling to differentiate between the various plans, but basically i think what is best for me is a good hospital plan with gap cover. I have one year left in the country before i move overseas so not to phased by vitality etc.

Any one have a recommendation of a plan that I should be on? I have heard alot of people say get the coastal saver with discovery.

Any one with experiences with CAMAF? Looking at there first choice plan + gap cover

Best medical aid in SA hands down. But expensive ;)

If you are young and healthy, go cheap(est) plan.

I paid for like 2nd best and wasting money. I never go to doctor(s) because I don't get sick very often but paid a boatload.

Once doctors and hospitals see that Platinum coloured CAMAF medical aid card. You're treated like royalty :p

if you go with Coastal Core (has 200% rate cover).. just remember, the individual medical procedure allowances for hospital cover is less than e.g. Classic Delta Core (has 300% rate cover). 2ndly you will need gap cover in particular for Coastal Core (200% rate cover only) so more likely will have out of pocket gap to cover without gap cover.

thanks for this, so now i need to compared discovery coastal core classic & essential to camaf first choice.
I want the ability to be able to go to any private hospital nationwide.

Camaf cover is decent but my biggest gripe was that they don't provide international cover. In hospital cover was higher than average.

Requested proof of cover while travelling on a number of trips last year. I was told none available and was forced to take insurance. Maybe it's from this year? I'm not with camaf now

To arrange your cover and to get your Insurance Certificate, please click here or complete the Application Form and email it to [email protected]

Alternatively, you can contact the Travel Insurance Desk on 011 521 4504 and the consultant will assist you with issuing of your documents. Have your CAMAF membership number handy so that you can be validated, together with your passport number, date of birth, destination and travel dates.

The travel insurance desk will send you your Insurance Certificate, Policy Document and emergency contact numbers.

Also it's the insurance for people like mtn staff, and a lot of them travel for work.

Í've been with all of them, all are ripoffs (CAMAF & Discovery are the worst) and all do the least possible for you, regardless of the plan that you are on. They are run by the medical fraternity for the benefit of (guess who?) the medical fraternity.

If you're young, unmarried, and relatively healthy (other than the odd flu and babelaas), AND you are forced to join a medical aid by your employer, then consider choosing the cheapest and nastiest hospital plan (will probably already cost you R1200 or so). Then pay R2-3000 per month into an investment account. You'll save 1000s, still get the (dubious) benefit of PMBs, and still get hospital care in the event that you have a motor vehicle accident or similar.

thoughts on Topmed Active Saver - 2018 ?

Its R 1 900 a month with gap cover vs camaf R 2 480, figure i bank the difference of R600 a month & some change into an investment account should i need it.

If sht goes seriously sideways then I'd definitely want to be on CAMAF. They push back on claims much less than others from what I've seen.

That said I know many that complain about CAMAF being bad value on a day to day sniffing nose flu level.
