Hi all,
Thought to ask, what is usually replaced when cambelt is replaced?

Heard you need a tensioner and the belt?

But wouldn't know what exactly needs to be changed, just know its risky and goes wrong sometimes

It depends on the car but typically the belt and the tensioner and if you dont know how to get the timing set correctly you can damage the engine. Its not a nice job either.

Its on a kia picanto,
Wouldn't dream to do it myself,
Actually not even sure if it needs to be done
But usually belt itself and tensioned replaced right?
Also since you say not a nice job, usually how long does it take?

If i have so service book, and my car at 104000 and on shutdown always squeaks and sometimes when running sounds diffrent from other picantos....

Am thinking its worth doing as anybody who buys the car from me, might ask about that....

You should be doing it at 100k km because if it fails, you're very much screwed. It's a common wear item so it's almost guaranteed to come up when selling the car.

Any decent independent mech can do it. Will probably quote you on 2-3 hours of labour and you can expect to pay around 3k.

Ok cool, any brands of timing belt i should get?
Also tensioner, is that needed here?

Any specifics requirements to be followed after its done? Oil change nessasary?

You can either choose an original part or a generic, generic will be fine but I've no idea if there's different "brands"
You replace the belt and tensioner at the same time(usually called a "cambelt kit") and good practice is to do the water pump as well. No need for oil change, coolant will be changed if you do the water pump.

If it fails you will bend the valves and it's head off to the engineers, etc. i.e. Don't let it fail. It's the belt and tensioner to be replaced. Do-able on your own if you're mechanically minded, if you only know how to change a wheel, then leave it to a mechanic.

Good advice, ideal time to change it as there would be no additional labour involved as everything is already removed so changing it is chop chop.

What year picanto model is it?

Make sure the sounds dont have anything to do with this:

2010 model, and that's what I'm most afraid of,

I thought mine was/is susceptible, seems it wasn't but one can never know.....

I did see when they fitted the camshaft cover, they removed and showed me that particular bolt

Apparently the story is this bolt near the altinator is the whole thing with crankshaft pulley bolt story, wasn't machnined properly from the factory.

Mine looked ok, had visible threads on it and didn't look worn out,

Not sure if when replacing cambelt it also needs changing....

Can confirm, it is an interference engine and valves will be damaged if belt fails!

oh dear, so belt, tensioner and water pump all need to be changed to be safe here?

any particular brands I should use? stay away from?
also timeframe, how long should this take?

For the belt, Gates or Contitech (if not a Kia original part). Buy the tensioner from Kia - they are not that expensive for the peace of mind that you get.

I'm next to Korean parts, so ill get that part original but not from kia head office themselves

Nessasary to replace water pump as well?

If you've actually been using coolant in your engine as opposed to just water (you'd be surprised how many people do this), you water pump should be fine, however you may as well change it while you're in there, because it will be a major pain in the ass to strip everything again JUST to do the water pump if it fails later on.
