Wife and I are planning an exotic holiday for late next year, and we fancy something like a tour to Cambodia, a few days for viewing the culture and history, and a couple of days at a beach resort.

Anybody here traveled there before? Did you wing it on your own, or go through a travel agent?

Rather go Cuba see the old parts now before the Yankee cultural imperialism destroys it all.

wing it if you are on a budget, it's easy to get around and cheaper too. Siam Riep is an interesting town apart form the temples so stay a couple of days there

Was thinking of a few days in Sihanoukville, a couple in Kep, Kapot and the Siam Riep etc. 10 - 13 days.

Was there last year and loved it.

Grab yourself a hotel and then start exploring. Tuc Tuc's are about $1 for a trip. We went to Angkor for 3 days at about $14 a day for the Tuc Tuc driver (he came with the hotel).

Bash it up with the locals in "Pub Street" and do some "Same Same but Different" shopping at the night market.

Don't be afraid of the "Everything is charged in dollars" as we were. it all "even's" out in the end. Best bit - the ATM's dispense dollars :D - So stock up if you want :]

Just check with Agoda or Hotels.com and see where the specials are.

You'll need a Visa also (electronic versions available on the internet) and I think it was about $30 for the visa...

We fly on Qatar to Bangkok (about R6400 return per person economy) and then from there local flights around the area (Vietnam / Laos)...

All in all it seems like a good time can be had at not a too hefty price.

Went to Vietnam & Cambodia in Feb 2015 for our honeymoon. I preferred Vietnam while my wife preferred Cambodia.

Cambodia was nice, we only spent 3 days in Siem Reap, which is more than enough.

It is more expensive than Vietnam. Food is great, beers are very good, avoid wine.

You can get a visa on arrival, just have the exact dollar amount and 2 passport photos handy.

Hi. I was there exactly a year ago. We were a group of about 20, from SA, who used a company called Kampoul Adventures (http://www.adventure.com.kh/html/), who were fantastic, well-priced, professional and their tour guides had brilliant knowledge. You would have to, however, organise your own flights from SA to Cambodia - we flew via Singapore.
You can get a visa on arrival, at the airport. Some airlines hand out visa forms in-flight, so that you can complete them prior to arrival and i recommend you do that if possible. Also make sure you take 2 passport photos with you, for the visa application. Make sure you have the exact amount, ie USD30 as they don't always have change. Or you can apply online, https://www.evisa.gov.kh/Default.aspx, costs USD40 and you need to upload a recent photo of yourself. The online visa is only available for certain nationalities and at certain border crossings, which you can check online.
Definitely spend more time in Siem Reap than in Phnom Penh. It's is smaller, a great place for wandering around "walking street" in the evenings, going on day trips to the beautiful temples. You can easily spend 4-5 full days exploring the town itself and the surrounds. Take your time visiting the temples - it is extremely hot and humid and spending a full day touring temples is exhausting. Try and spend about 3 mornings visiting the temples, then laze at the hotel pool for the afternoon.

I suggest you fly from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh as the roads are in a very bad state. We caught a bus from PP to Sihanoukville, which is around 250km and it took us 8 hours.

Phnom Penh - is just another capital city, although the markets (Central and Russian) make for great shopping. The riverfront is a lovely place to go around sunset. The area comes alive at this time of day, when it gets cooler. Find a rooftop bar and grab a refreshment and absorb the wonderful sights and sounds.
Sihanoukville is the beach resort we visited. 3-4 days would be sufficient. Not much to do and see in S'Ville itself, but you can catch a boat out to the surrounding islands for some snorkelling, which is great.

Loved Camobodia

Just remember to take ur shakes or pizza extra happy

While not the most beautiful beach, it was one of favourite places to chill and enjoy the beaxh culture.

Also very easy to travel in. Go for it

Also done it before for a few days, i didn't do any beach side but i did do Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.
3 days is more than enough in Reap, you just go mad walkies in all the temples, very lekker. Beers are super cheap, food is excellent! I love the lok lak.
For the history side head down to phnom penh and goto the killing fields and S21 prison, its an extremely emotional journey so be prepared.
If your so inclined go shoot some AK47's / Bazookas etc out in the jungle, the backpacker/tourist places have hookups to do that, usually ex American vets who have set up shop in the jungles lol. I think it was about $50 for a clip for the AK and about $200 to shoot a bazooka, $1000 to blow up a cow if thats your thing.

Now I have this song stuck in my head.

was an awesome place, i preferred Vietnam, but just as diverse and amazing.

i did a trip through Intrepid tours, they only use local guides and don't believe in using animals for touristy experiences etc.
well priced and very unique local experiences.

funny how most preferred Vietnam over Camobodia

I had a great experience in Phnom Penh when my Mom became friends with her tuk tuk driver and we stayed in their house for a week. Truly amazing what food they made from a very simple kitchen.

It was magical
