Well on my camera the base station has a "quick burn" button, I place the camera on the station hit the button and it burns my video to DVD. Simple as That. But let me tell you to fill 30 GIG's of video is not as easy as you may think!

How many hours does 30gb give you?

Lugging around a base-station and a box of dvds seems like a convoluted process if you're sightseeing for the day or something and you need to quickly free up space. If 30gb covers a day out then it wouldnt be as much of a problem.

Grim is right - it's not easy to fill a 30GB camcorder. Mine can record up to 7 hours at its highest quality. I also have a 30GB model.
I usually transfer the media to my pc as soon as I'm done shooting. It's quick.

Thanks - sounds promising. Maybe I'll get one for the missus - though I am leaning towards the aforementioned Flip simply for the ease of use.

Ok put it this way I bought my camera just before my honey moon and I used it non stop for 2 weeks and I think I ended up using something ridiculous like 6 GIG's! And that was on full quality as well. You certainly wont be needing to lug the base station or DVD's around for a day trip.

The specs say that you get about 8 Hours footage on High quality.
 
judging by the comments here, it's recommended these days to get a HDD or SD card supported camcorder rather than a DVD model. I'd be using the camera overseas whilst on holiday and therefore wouldn't have access to my laptop to transfer footage over since I'm sure 7 hours worth won't last a good month :) I suppose I could just fill up SD cards but aren't they relatively expensive and small in capacity?

If I were to get a HDD/SD camcorder, which models and makes would you recommend? I've so far been told to go for Sony and Cannon but I'm not sure if they fall in my budget. I'm looking to spend a maximum of R4000 but would prefer to drop that to around R3500+-.

I'm more of a photographer than a videographer so I'll leave it to the missus. Those Flips are selling like mad in the states because they're simple and easy enough to stuff in your pocket.

lol - I've just forked out $1500 on camera glass - the only thing I'm getting is grief when the missus sees the visa bill :o :D

The nice thing about the HDD is that they often have slots for SD as well. So once the HDD is full, you can add SD and capture to that. Based on your budget, it's a bit tough to recommend anything specific. I'll have a look and get back to you. How soon do you need to know?
