Haha
My advice take your 8k budget buy the point and shoot for 4k buy a housing for 2k and go on a dive course for the other 2k.
Then take some great shots :)
Oh and another 2k for the trip to sodwana. That will be the best 10k that you will ever have spent.

I'm already a diver! (NAUI Master!) GOOD advice though!

What's his style?

Something like a Canon S95 or a Nikon P7000 might be just what the Dr ordered.

I had a look @ the Canon S95 and Nikon P7000. Must say I prefer the looks and features of the Nikon! Very nice camera!

BTW, the Sony NEX5 plus 18-55 lens is selling for R4200 at the Sony shop. A bargain I think. Remember it has a DSLR size sensor!

Blender1, bought a camera?

I'm hunting for a camera in the sub R4k range and was close to buying the Nikon S9100 but then I heard that many are unhappy with it due to firmware problems (camera freezes). The Nikon P500 is a very good option over the R4k mark if the size is acceptable.

The Canon SX230 offers excellent value but lacks the wider angle lense. The Sony HX9V at about R3300 looks like the best option for me now.

The S95 lacks in optical zoom.

Amzon.com is a good place to get user reviews.

Yep, bought the Nikon P500. So far I'm very happy, excellent camera!
Spoke a few people and feedback I received was that the Nikon is the best bang for your buck.
Paid R4500 and added a few accessories.

Have you looked at the Sony DSC-HX100? also in the R4500 range.

I ended up buying the Sony DSC-WX10 this morning for R2600 at Orms in CT. Lacks the zoom, but it has everything else I wanted. Most important was HDR and wide angle, plus quality lens. Very small and pocketable. The P500 is brilliant, my first choice but out of reach.
