Looking for a great low light camera.
Was looking at the Sony A77 as it's got awesome low light capabilities but also got burned with my Sony alpha a700. Lots of noise.
What nikon is there that's great in low light ?

Thanks

Does Nikon make better use of Sony's sensors than Sony does?

The D750 will cost $2300 body only before tax. This may be too much for your budget.

It depends on how high your standards are for low noise. Several of the APS sized sensors on current SLRs are providing reasonable performance in this regard. As an example I have just been looking at some photos I took yesterday. Below is one shot at ISO 1600, together with a 100% crop of an area that is susceptible to showing noise. The crop area is away from the focus point, but that should not matter for your purposes. The shot is an out-of-camera jpg with no processing except for the obvious scaling of the first image for display on the forum. The noise reduction settings were on default.

To give an idea of scale this photo would print at 0.5m wide at 300dpi.

Speaking of planes got any tips? I'm supposed to shoot one during takeoff today at a private airfield, a mustang, and it's been a while. :o

(Post them in the General thread if you don't mind - I dont want to derail this thread :))

Incredible what camera ?

My Sony a700 on anything more than 400 is not even worth posting and explain this how is it that nikon use Sony sensors but sony has not until now been able to sort out the noise

Incredible what camera ?

This is with a Pentax K-3. Just bought it and am trying to figure out how to take pictures with it - that is why the noise reduction is still on default settings.

The camera uses a 24MP Sony sensor.

I found another picture shot taken at ISO 3200. The noise is a step more noticeable. I can post this one as well if you are interested.

At the time of the A700 it was no secret that both Nikon and Pentax got a lot more out of Sony's sensors than Sony did.

I don't know what things are like now though. I'm hugely impressed with the RX-100, but I have no other contemporary camera with a 1" 20MP Sony sensor to compare it to :o
